The HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 displays a blue screen with error code B80FC102 and fail to complete startup. The error is associated with a firmware crash or corrupted/failed firmware state.

  • Firmware installation that did not complete correctly.
  • Corrupted firmware or printer system data.
  • Temporary printer memory/state corruption.
  • A configuration problem following a firmware update.
  • Less commonly, an underlying printer hardware failure if firmware recovery does not resolve the issue.

Troubleshooting steps

1: Record the Error

  • Note the complete error displayed on the printer.
  • Confirm that the code is B80FC102.
  • If possible, take a photograph of the blue screen.
  • Note whether the problem started:
    • Immediately after a firmware update.
    • After a power interruption.
    • After changing network settings.
    • After installing or updating printer software.
  • If the printer provides diagnostic/history information, record the available information before resetting the printer.

This information helps determine whether the failure is associated with firmware, configuration, or hardware.

2: Perform a Full Power Reset

  • Turn off the printer using the Power button.
  • If the printer does not turn off normally, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
  • Disconnect the power cord from the electrical outlet.
  • Disconnect USB/Ethernet cables and other cables from the printer.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Connect the printer directly to a known-good wall outlet.
  • Do not use a surge protector, extension cord, or UPS during this test.
  • Turn on the printer.
  • Allow the printer several minutes to complete initialization.

A complete power drain can clear temporary memory/state corruption and allows the printer's firmware to initialize from a clean state.

3: Check Whether the Printer Can Reach the Home Screen

After powering on, determine whether the printer:

  • Reaches the normal Home screen.
  • Remains permanently on the blue error screen.
  • Starts normally but crashes after several seconds/minutes.
  • Allows access to Setup or Printer Maintenance.

If the Home screen is available

Continue with the firmware and reset procedures below.

If the printer remains stuck on B80FC102

Skip to 5 – Firmware Recovery/Reinstallation.

4: Restore Printer Defaults

If the printer successfully reaches the control-panel menus:

  • Open Setup.
  • Look for the printer's Restore Defaults / Restore Factory Defaults option.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Allow the printer to restart.
  • Reconfigure Wi-Fi/network settings if necessary.
  • Test the printer.

A corrupted configuration or invalid stored setting can sometimes cause a firmware crash. Restoring defaults removes user configuration and returns the printer to a clean configuration state.

Note: Restoring defaults may remove saved network settings and other customized printer settings.

5: Reinstall or Update the Printer Firmware

This is the primary recovery step when B80FC102 persists, particularly when the issue began immediately after a firmware update.

  • On a computer, open the official HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 support page.
  • Select Software and Drivers.
  • Select the appropriate operating system.
  • Locate the available firmware for the OfficeJet Pro 7740.
  • Download the firmware package from HP.
  • Close unnecessary applications on the computer.
  • Connect the printer to the computer using the connection supported by the firmware utility, such as USB or network.
  • Run the HP firmware update utility.
  • Select the OfficeJet Pro 7740 when prompted.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall/update the firmware.
  • Do not turn off the printer or disconnect its power while the firmware is being installed.
  • Wait until the firmware process finishes and the printer restarts.
  • Check whether B80FC102 has cleared.

If the firmware image or firmware installation state is corrupted, reinstalling the correct firmware can restore the printer's operating system.

6: If the Printer Cannot Boot Normally

If the printer remains on the blue B80FC102 screen:

  • Perform the 60-second power reset again.
  • Connect the printer directly to a wall outlet.
  • Disconnect unnecessary USB/network cables.
  • Restart the printer.
  • From a Windows computer, download the appropriate HP firmware update utility for the OfficeJet Pro 7740.
  • Connect the printer directly to the computer where supported.
  • Run the firmware utility.
  • Follow the utility's instructions for detecting and updating the printer.
  • Allow the firmware process to complete without interrupting power.

If the firmware utility cannot detect the printer or cannot complete the recovery, continue to the hardware/service assessment.

7: Test the Printer After Firmware Recovery

After the firmware update/reinstallation:

  • Restart the printer.
  • Verify that the normal Home screen appears.
  • Check whether the printer remains powered on without displaying B80FC102.
  • Print an internal printer report or test page.
  • Test copying directly from the printer.
  • Test scanning.
  • Reconnect the printer to Wi-Fi if necessary.
  • Add the printer back to the HP app/operating system.
  • Send a test print from the computer.

Testing directly from the printer first helps determine whether the problem has been resolved at the printer level before introducing computer or network variables.

8: Determine Whether the Problem Is Hardware-Related

If all of the following are true:

  • The printer continues displaying B80FC102.
  • A full power reset does not resolve the problem.
  • The printer cannot complete firmware recovery.
  • The correct firmware has been successfully attempted.
  • Restoring defaults is not possible or does not help.

Then the issue may require printer hardware/service evaluation.
