- HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Wide Format All-in-One Printer – “Prin...
The HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Wide Format All-in-One Printer may display a “hp7740 printhead missing,” “Printhead Not Detected,” or “Printhead Incorrectly Installed” error. This issue can occur when the printhead is not properly seated, the electrical contacts are dirty, or the printer cannot detect the printhead correctly. The printer may also stop printing or display a Printer Failure message.
This error generally indicates that the printer cannot properly detect or communicate with the printhead.
Troubleshooting
1: Reset the printer
- Turn on the printer.
- Wait until the printer is idle.
- Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer while it is still turned on.
- Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Wait at least 60 seconds.
- Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet.
- Reconnect the power cord to the printer.
- Turn on the printer and check whether the error is resolved.
2: Reseat the printhead
If the error remains:
- Turn on the printer.
- Open the cartridge access door.
- Wait until the carriage moves to the access position and becomes idle.
- Lift the printhead latch to unlock the printhead.
- Carefully remove the printhead with the ink cartridges installed.
- Place the printhead on a clean sheet of paper.
- Inspect the printhead and the carriage area for visible damage or ink contamination.
- Reinstall the printhead, making sure it is seated correctly.
- Push the printhead latch down firmly to lock it.
- Close the cartridge access door.
- Wait for the printer to initialize and check the display.
Important: Do not touch the electrical contacts or the printhead nozzles. Touching these areas can cause electrical or print-quality problems.
3: Check the printhead latch
If the error continues:
- Open the cartridge access door.
- Wait until the carriage is idle.
- Lift the printhead latch.
- Verify that the printhead is properly positioned.
- Lower the latch completely so that the printhead is securely locked.
- Close the cartridge access door.
- Restart the printer.
A printhead that is not properly locked can prevent the printer from detecting it.
4: Check the ink cartridges
- Open the cartridge access door.
- Verify that all cartridges are installed correctly.
- Make sure each cartridge is fully seated.
- Check for damaged or leaking cartridges.
- Close the cartridge access door.
- Restart the printer.
If the printhead was replaced, HP recommends using the appropriate SETUP ink cartridges supplied with the replacement printhead when required.
5: Replace the printhead
If reseating the printhead does not resolve the error, the printhead may be defective.
