- HP OfficeJet Pro 8024e – “Complete printer setup This printe...
The “Complete printer setup. This printer needs to be set up. Follow the instructions with the printer” message means the HP app sees your OfficeJet Pro 8024e on the network, but its initial setup and cloud registration (HP+ / Web Services) are not finished. The printer must be fully set up and connected before all features work.
Troubleshooting steps
1. Make sure the printer is fully set up on the network
- Check Wi‑Fi connection on the printer control panel
- On the printer, open the network/Wi‑Fi menu.
- Confirm it shows Connected to your home network.
- If not:
- Run Wi‑Fi Setup again and select your Wi‑Fi name.
- Enter the Wi‑Fi password and complete connection.
- Once connected, the printer should get an IP address from your router. This is required for setup in HP App.
(For some routers like CenturyLink C4000, certain HP printers need special steps to connect; once the printer has an IP address, HP App setup can continue.)
HP App can only complete setup when the printer is online and has a valid IP address on the same network as your phone/PC.
2. Add/claim the printer using HP App correctly
- Open HP app on your phone or Windows/Mac.
- Sign in with your HP account.
- If the printer is shown with a message about completing setup:
- Click the printer image.
- If you see an option like Forget your printer / Remove from app / Hide printer, use it to clear the old entry.
- Close the app and restart your device.
- Reopen HP App:
- Click Set Up a New Printer or Add Printer.
- Select your OfficeJet Pro 8024e.
- Follow all on‑screen prompts until setup finishes (network, HP account, HP+ activation, etc.).
HP+ / HP Web Services printers such as OfficeJet Pro 8020e/8024e require that you “claim” and register the printer through HP App or HP Easy Start rather than manually entering claim codes. If registration is incomplete, HP App shows that the printer “needs to be set up.”
3. If claiming/registration fails, retry using HP App or HP Easy Start
If HP App says it is unable to register or claim the printer:
Using HP App
- In HP App, if a registration error appears, click Try again.
- If still unable:
- Click the printer image.
- Click Forget your printer.
- Close HP App and restart your device.
- Open HP App again and repeat Set Up a New Printer and follow prompts.
Using HP Easy Start (Windows/macOS)
- Go to 123.hp.com and download HP Easy Start.
- Run HP Easy Start and select your OfficeJet Pro 8024e.
- Follow the on‑screen steps to connect the printer and complete setup.
- If HP Easy Start cannot register the printer, exit and click Try again to repeat.
Sometimes initial cloud registration fails or times out. Retrying with HP App or HP Easy Start forces a fresh registration attempt so the printer status changes from “needs to be set up” to fully registered.
4. Restore factory defaults if setup is stuck
If the printer has partial or corrupted configuration, you can reset it and start over.
-
Open Advanced Settings:
- In HP App: click the printer image > Advanced Settings.
- Or use a browser: enter the printer’s IP address to open the Embedded Web Server (EWS).
-
On EWS:
- Click Settings or System.
- If prompted:
- For LaserJet models: username Admin and PIN from the printer label (not needed for most OfficeJet, but similar flow is described).
- Find Restore Factory Defaults or Factory under Restore Defaults.
- Click Restore Factory Defaults > Yes.
-
Wait ~20 seconds for the printer to restart.
-
Reconnect the printer to Wi‑Fi.
-
Check for firmware updates if prompted.
-
Open HP App or HP Easy Start again and run full setup/claim process from the beginning.
Restoring factory defaults clears previous failed or partial configuration, which can cause repeated “complete setup” messages or claim errors. After reset, the printer behaves like new and can be registered cleanly.
5. Install and use HP Print Support Application (Windows 11, optional)
If you use Windows 11, make sure the HP Print Support Application (HP PSA) and HP App / HP app are correctly installed:
- Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps and search for “HP”.
- Confirm:
- HP Print Support Application is present (driver solution built on Microsoft PSA).
- HP app is installed.
- If missing:
- Open Printers & scanners in Windows.
- Select your printer and click Get app to install HP PSA via Microsoft Store.
- Then open HP app, add the printer, and complete setup.
HP PSA and HP App work together to provide the full HP+ / cloud experience and can help ensure the printer is properly recognized and configured.
