if your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 e-All-in-One Printer (N911a) showing“Printer is in Error State”, these are the most relevant generic HP troubleshooting steps

1) Reset the printer

A reset can recover from printer errors or failures.

  1. Press the Power button to turn off the printer. If it does not turn off, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the power source.
  3. Wait 60 seconds.
  4. Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet and reconnect it to the printer.
  5. Turn the printer on.

HP states this can recover from printer errors or failures.

2) Update the printer firmware

If the printer is connected to a network with Internet access, update the firmware from the printer control panel.

  1. From the Home screen, touch the ePrint icon.
  2. Wait for the printer to connect to the ePrint server.
  3. Touch Settings.
  4. Touch Printer Update.
  5. Touch Check for Update Now.

HP includes firmware update as a recovery step for printer issues and failures.

3) Check paper and paper loading

Paper feed issues can trigger printer errors.

What to check:

  • Remove the tray and inspect for:
    • torn paper
    • packaging material
    • tape
    • anything blocking the paper path
  • Use only clean, unused paper.
  • Do not use paper that is bent, torn, dusty, damp, wrinkled, curled, or mixed sizes/types.
  • Make sure paper does not go above the red fill lines.
  • Adjust the paper width and length guides so they rest against the paper.
  • Reinsert the tray fully and extend the output tray.

HP notes that paper feed problems such as Out of Paper or Pick Motor Stalled can occur if paper is loaded incorrectly or if debris blocks the feed path.

4) Clean the pick roller and duplex rollers

If the printer is not feeding paper correctly, clean the rollers.

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord.
  2. Remove Tray 1.
  3. Check for jammed or torn paper.
  4. Locate the pick roller on the underside of the printer.
  5. Use a clean, lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled, filtered, or bottled water.
  6. Clean the rubber roller while rotating it to the right.
  7. Remove the duplexer and check/clean its rollers too.
  8. Let rollers dry for about 10 minutes.
  9. Reassemble and power the printer back on.

Dirty rollers or paper debris can cause feed errors and put the printer into an error condition.

5) Check ink levels

Low or empty cartridges can affect printer operation.

  1. On the printer control panel, touch the ink level icon.
  2. Check whether any cartridge is low or empty.

HP notes the printer can enter limited backup mode at very low ink levels, which may affect printing behavior.

6) Replace low or empty cartridges

If any cartridges are depleted, replace them.

Basic steps:

  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Open the cartridge access door.
  3. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent.
  4. Press the cartridge to release it and remove it.
  5. Insert the new cartridge into the correct color-coded slot until it clicks.
  6. Close the access door.

Empty or faulty cartridges can contribute to print and printer-state issues.

7) Print a Print Quality Report

Use the printer’s internal report to verify whether the hardware is functioning correctly.

  1. Load plain white paper.
  2. On the control panel, touch the right arrow.
  3. Touch Setup > Reports.
  4. Touch Print Quality Report
