If the ADF shows “Document loaded” and the printer displays “Starting Copy” but does not complete the copy, the issue is usually related to ADF feeding/scan path, paper/loading, or printer setup/software state.

Troubleshooting Steps

1. Confirm the original is loaded correctly

  • Place the document in the ADF properly aligned.
  • Adjust the document guides so they fit the paper.
  • If originals are fragile, torn, or oddly sized, feed carefully. HP guidance notes that feeding problems can occur if originals are not loaded correctly in the ADF.

2. Check for ADF feed issues

  • If originals are not feeding correctly, make sure the front edge of the ADF tray is snapped into position.
  • Remove the stack and try one sheet only to rule out multi-page feed issues.

3. Verify paper is loaded in the input tray

For copy jobs, make sure:

  • Plain paper is loaded correctly in the input tray.
  • The paper-width and paper-length guides are snug against the paper.
  • The tray is not overloaded.
  • The paper is flat and free of wrinkles, dust, bends, or curled edges.

4. Try a basic copy again

  1. Load the input tray with paper.
  2. Load the original.
  3. If needed, set the correct Paper Type.
  4. Press Start Copy / START Black or Color.

If it stalls again, continue below.

5. Cancel the job and retry

  • Press Cancel on the printer.
  • Remove the original from the ADF.
  • Reload it and try copying again.

6. Test with a different original

Try:

  • A clean plain sheet
  • One page only
  • Standard size paper

This helps determine whether the issue is caused by the original itself.

7. Power reset the printer

  1. Turn off the printer using the Power/On button.
  2. Unplug the power connection from the back.
  3. Plug it back in.
  4. Turn the printer on again.

8. Check if the issue is ADF-only

If available, try copying using the scanner glass instead of the ADF.

  • If glass copying works but ADF copying does not, the issue is likely in the ADF feed or scan process rather than the print engine.

9. Review fax/scan behavior if ADF is detected but not processing

The ADF is used for scan, copy, and fax workflows. If the ADF detects paper but does not proceed, this can indicate a problem with:

  • the ADF feed path,
  • the scan process,
  • or how the job is being initiated.

Common reasons

  • Original not feeding correctly in the ADF
  • ADF tray/document guides not positioned correctly
  • Paper loading issue in the input tray
  • Paper jam or feed-related condition
  • Temporary printer state requiring reset
  • ADF-specific problem if glass copy still works
