Error code B815836A / BB815839A on an HP OfficeJet Pro 9018 typically indicates a firmware-level crash, often occurring during the printhead alignment process. It suggests a failure in the ink system, such as corrupted calibration data or a hardware fault within the printhead carriage.

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Check the ink cartridges for leaks

    • Open the ink cartridge access door.
    • Wait until the carriage stops moving.
    • Remove each ink cartridge one at a time.
    • Inspect each cartridge for leaking ink.
    • Replace any leaking cartridge. Do not use leaking cartridges.
    • Reinstall cartridges that are not leaking.
    • Close the cartridge access door.

  2. Reset the printer

    • Turn off the printer using the power button.
    • If it does not turn off, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
    • Unplug the power cord from the power source.
    • Wait 60 seconds.
    • Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet and reconnect it to the printer.
    • Turn the printer back on.

  3. Reseat the printhead (only if your printer has a removable printhead with a latch)

    • Open the cartridge access area.
    • Wait for the carriage to stop moving.
    • Check whether the carriage has a latch.
    • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
    • Lift the carriage latch.
    • Slightly lift the printhead, then place it back down.
    • Gently wiggle the printhead left and right.
    • Lower the latch until it stops.
    • Close the access area.
    • Reconnect the power cord.

  4. Repeat printhead reseating if needed

    • If the error remains, you can repeat the printhead reseating steps up to three times.

Possible Reason

Based on the HP document, this type of error can be related to:

  • a print system problem
  • an ink system problem
  • a printer system failure
  • leaking cartridges
  • a printhead seating issue
