HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 All-in-One Printer series printing or copying failures,
Error Type: Internal system / firmware / hardware initialization failure
Symptoms: Printer cannot print or copy; may freeze or display error B8157CEE
Common Causes: Firmware glitch, interrupted update, corrupted memory state, or internal hardware fault

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Use genuine HP ink cartridges

    • HP recommends genuine HP supplies because non-HP or refilled cartridges can cause reliability or quality problems.

  2. Check paper and print settings

    • Use clean, wrinkle-free paper.
    • Make sure the correct paper type, size, color, and quality settings are selected.
    • Confirm the file/document quality is good.

  3. Check estimated ink levels

    • On the printer control panel, swipe down to open the Dashboard, then touch the Ink Level Indicator icon.

  4. Replace empty ink cartridges if needed

    • Open the cartridge access door.
    • Wait for the carriage to stop moving.
    • Remove and replace any empty cartridge.
    • Make sure each cartridge is fully seated.

  5. Print a Print Quality Diagnostic Page

    • Load plain white paper.
    • Swipe down on the control panel dashboard.
    • Touch Setup > Reports > Print Quality Report.

  6. Clean the printhead

    • Go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Clean Printhead > Continue.
    • If needed, repeat cleaning. HP notes a badly clogged printhead might require another cleaning cycle.

  7. Align the printhead

    • Go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Align Printhead > Continue.
    • Scan the alignment page when prompted.

  8. Replace the printhead if cleaning does not help

    • To replace the printhead if the diagnostic page shows streaking or missing color blocks and repeated cleaning does not resolve the issue.

Possible Reasons

Printing/copying problems can be caused by:

  • Empty or low ink cartridges
  • Non-genuine or refilled cartridges
  • Clogged printhead
  • Printhead alignment issues
  • Incorrect paper or print settings
  • Poor paper condition
  • Poor file/image quality
