- HP Officejet Pro 8600 N911g — Scan to Computer Not Showing M...
If you can scan from the Mac, but the printer does not see the Mac on the printer display for Scan to Computer, the issue is usually related to HP scan feature setup, network connection, or Mac-side configuration.
Generic troubleshooting steps
1) Confirm the printer and Mac are on the same network
- Make sure the printer is connected by wireless or Ethernet to the same network as the Mac.
- HP Digital Solutions and network scanning require an active network connection.
- If the printer is connected by USB, network-based scan features on the printer display will not work the same way. HP notes that with USB, scanning is done using the HP software on the computer instead.
The printer must be able to communicate with the Mac over the network for scan destinations to appear.
2) Open HP Utility on the Mac
- On Mac, open HP Utility.
- Look for scan-related setup options such as:
- Scan to Network Folder
- Scan to Email
- general scan settings for the printer
HP says Mac configuration for digital scan features is done through HP Utility.
3) Verify HP software is installed
- Make sure the full HP software for the Officejet Pro 8600 is installed on the Mac, not only basic print support.
- HP recommends using the HP software provided with the printer to set up digital solutions.
Basic driver-only setups may allow computer-initiated scanning, but not all front-panel scan features.
4) Check whether you are trying to use “Scan to Computer” or another scan destination
For this printer family, HP documents these front-panel scan destinations:
- Scan to Network Folder
- Scan to Email
On the printer control panel:
- Touch Scan
- Then select the configured destination, such as Network Folder or Email
The printer display only shows destinations that have been configured first in HP software or the printer’s embedded web server (EWS).
5) Set up a scan destination again
If the Mac is not appearing:
- In HP Utility, reconfigure the scan destination
- Or use the printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS) to create the destination again
For example, HP says in EWS you can:
- open the EWS
- go to Home
- choose Network Folder Setup or Outgoing Email Profiles
- click New
- then Save and Test
Recreating the destination refreshes the link between the printer and the Mac/network service.
6) Make sure shared-folder permissions are correct
If using Scan to Network Folder:
- Confirm the shared folder exists on the Mac/network
- Confirm the printer has the correct folder path
- Confirm the username/password are correct if required
- Confirm the folder has write access
HP states Scan to Network Folder requires an existing shared folder and appropriate privileges.
7) Restart devices
- Restart the printer
- Restart the Mac
- Restart the router/network if needed
This can refresh network discovery and communication.
Try the printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS)
you can set up HP Digital Solutions through the EWS instead of HP software.
If HP Utility on Mac is not exposing the needed setup clearly, EWS can often confirm whether the feature is configured on the printer.
If scanning from the Mac works, the scanner hardware is likely OK
Because you can already scan using the HP app on the Mac:
- the scanner itself is likely functioning
- the problem is more likely with front-panel scan destination setup, network discovery, or digital solution configuration
Successful Mac-initiated scanning usually rules out a basic scanner hardware failure.
