The HP Smart Tank Plus 651 Wireless All-in-One repeatedly displays error code 0xB80586AA. Restarting or unplugging the printer might not clear the error.

The issue can occur while the printer is being used with macOS 15 Sequoia.

Troubleshooting Steps

1. Reset the Printer

Reset the printer to recover from a temporary printer error.

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Disconnect any USB cable connected to the printer.
  • Wait approximately 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Reconnect the power cord directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or extension cord.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn on the printer, if it does not turn on automatically.
  • Wait until the printer completes its startup process and becomes idle.

2. Update the Printer Firmware

HP recommends keeping printer firmware up to date.

  • Go to HP Software and Driver Downloads.
  • Search for HP Smart Tank Plus 651 Wireless All-in-One.
  • Select the correct operating system, in this case macOS 15 Sequoia, if it is available for the product.
  • Check the Firmware section for an available firmware update.
  • Download the firmware package if HP lists one for the printer and operating system.
  • Follow the instructions provided by HP with the firmware update.
  • Do not turn off or disconnect the printer while the firmware update is being installed.
  • Restart the printer after the update if instructed.
HP's product support pages provide Software & Drivers sections for obtaining available printer software and firmware.

3. Check for Firmware Updates From the Printer

If the printer is operational enough to access its control-panel menus:

  • Make sure the printer is connected to the internet.
  • Open the printer's Setup or Settings menu.
  • Look for Printer Maintenance, Printer Update, or the available update option.
  • Check for an update.
  • If an update is found, follow the printer's instructions to install it.

4. Check the Printer Connection

If the printer is connected wirelessly:

  • Confirm that the printer remains connected to the wireless network.
  • Restart the printer and wireless router if the network connection has been interrupted.
  • Reconnect the printer to Wi-Fi if necessary.

HP provides dedicated troubleshooting for lost or unsuccessful Wi-Fi connections.

5. Re-add the Printer Through the HP App

HP recommends the HP app for printer setup.

If the printer becomes responsive after the reset:

  • Open the HP app on the Mac.
  • Make sure the Mac and printer are connected to the same network.
  • Add the printer again if it is no longer detected.
  • Complete any setup or update prompts displayed in the HP app.

6. Check macOS Compatibility

Because the reported computer is running macOS 15 Sequoia, use the HP product's Software and Drivers page to verify the software and drivers HP currently provides for the operating system.

HP product pages identify supported operating systems and provide available software and driver downloads based on the selected OS.
