Experiencing a false paper jam with your HP Photosmart C4740 printer can be frustrating. This error occurs when the printer reports a paper jam even though no paper is actually stuck.

Here's a detailed guide to help you resolve this issue:

Step 1: Look for Jammed Paper

  1. Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cord.
  2. Open the rear access door by pressing in the tab on the left side and pulling the door away from the printer.
  3. Gently remove any debris or torn pieces from the rollers, if present.
  4. Reattach the rear access door by gently pushing it forward until it snaps into place.
  5. Reconnect the power and turn on the printer.

Step 2: Check the Front for Jammed Paper

  1. Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cord.
  2. If applicable, pull down the input tray and lower the cartridge door.
  3. Gently remove any visible jammed paper from the rollers.
  4. Close the input tray and the cartridge door.
  5. Reconnect the power cord and turn the printer on.

Step 3: Ensure the Carriage Can Move Freely

  1. Disconnect the power cord again.
  2. Open the input tray and lower the cartridge door.
  3. Apply firm pressure to the right side of the carriage to move it to the left.
    • If it moves freely, proceed with the steps.
    • If not, seek service.
  4. Reconnect the power and turn on the printer.

Step 4: Clean the Paper Feed Rollers

  1. Disconnect the power cord.
  2. Remove the rear access door again.
  3. Clean the rollers with a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water.
  4. Allow the rollers to dry completely before reattaching the rear access door.
  5. Reconnect the power and turn on the printer.

Step 5: Reset the Printer

  1. Remove all paper from the input tray.
  2. Turn the printer on, if it isn't already.
  3. Disconnect the USB cable and open the cartridge door.
  4. Remove the ink cartridges and set them aside.
  5. Close the cartridge door, disconnect the power cord, and wait 60 seconds.
  6. Reconnect the power and turn on the printer.
  7. Reinsert the ink cartridges and close the cartridge door.
  8. Load paper into the input tray and try to print.

Step 6: Service the Printer

If the paper jam error persists after completing these steps, it might be time to service or replace your HP product

For warranty confirmation, check the HP Product Warranty Status. Note that fees may apply for products that are out of warranty.
