- Scan as Editable Text (OCR) with HP Scan (Windows)
Starting from June 2022, Optical Character Recognition (OCR) capabilities are no longer offered by the HP Full Feature Software and Drivers and the HP Universal Scan Software must be installed in addition to the printer software to allow OCR capabilities.
For HP print drivers downloaded after June 2022, the HP Universal Scan software is required to enable the Save as Editable Text (OCR) shortcut in HP Scan. HP print drivers downloaded before June 2022 do not need to install HP Universal Scan.
If the HP Scan software was reinstalled, please follow below steps to install the HP Universal Scan Software and enable OCR capabilities:
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_6106412-6106481-16
For any problem you may experience using OCR, please start a new topic in the community with a clear description of the problem and your operating system information.
Regards,
Shlomi

The universal scan driver is not available on the HP site for new windows 11 laptops connected to HP 6958 printer. I installed the hpscan.ext file but it does not work. Are there any other solutions to save a scan as an editable text (OCR) file?

The best solution appears to be to reinstall the old software and driver either from the disc included with the printer or by downloading the older software and driver onto a memory stick from an old laptop or desktop. Then removing the new software from the new machine and installing the older version. Careful not to update to the new software and driver that removes OCR. Otherwise purchasing expensive OCR software is the only other option as the freeware is not very trustworthy. If you don't care to scan to text many printer/scanners/fax machines have scanning software included.

that is outrageous when all of the documentation still refers to it as available and the HP smart app has a 'button' for it! misrepresentation!

Hi @Antoine1,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Using OCR with HP Scan on HP Officejet Pro 9132e!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Try these steps:
Install HP Scan App:
First, ensure that the HP Scan software is correctly installed on your computer. If not, you can download it from the HP website or use the installation CD that came with your printer.
Load the Document:
Place the document you want to scan on the scanner glass or in the automatic document feeder (ADF). Ensure the document is aligned correctly with the guides to avoid skewed results.
Open HP Scan:
Launch the HP Scan application from your computer. You can find this in the Applications area on your home screen.
Select Scan Settings:
- Choose a scan shortcut that supports OCR, such as "Save as Editable Text (OCR)".
- Ensure that the OCR option is selected during the scanning process. Choose a suitable file format like .txt or .rtf from the file type dropdown box.
Adjust Image Settings:
During scanning, adjust the image quality settings such as contrast, brightness, and resolution as necessary to improve OCR accuracy.
Save the Document:
After scanning, input a file name and save the document. The default location is usually in the Pictures folder under your Users directory. You can change the file type and save location if needed.
Open and Edit the Document:
Open the saved .rtf file using WordPad or any suitable text editor. Carefully review and edit the text for any recognition errors.
Utilize the Scanned Text:
Once edited, you can copy and paste the text into other applications like Microsoft Word or PowerPoint for further processing.
I hope this helps.
