If you get Error 500 when entering the printer claim code in the HP app, this can often be fixed by resetting Web Services and getting a new claim code. This issue can show up as Invalid Claim Code, Unexpected Error, Expired Code, Error 500, Printer code not recognized, or Printer already claimed.

Reason: the printer’s Web Services connection or claim code may be expired, invalid, or not syncing correctly with HP services.

Generic troubleshooting steps

  1. Reset Web Services on the printer

    • Open the printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS) from a web browser using the printer network page details.
    • Go to the Web Services tab.
    • Select Remove Web Services and confirm.
    • Then turn Web Services back on by selecting Continue or Enable and follow the prompts.
    • Resetting Web Services creates a fresh connection between the printer and HP services and removes old ePrint settings that can block activation.

  2. Get a new claim code

    • After Web Services is enabled again, the printer should provide a new information page or display showing the new claim code.
    • Use this newly generated code instead of the old one.
    • HP states old claim codes can be invalid, expired, or unrecognized.

  3. Manually add the printer through HP App website

    • Sign in to your HP App account.
    • Go to the HP Smart Add a Printer page and enter the new claim code.
    • HP identifies this as a workaround when claiming the printer through the app is failing.

  4. Confirm the printer is network-connected

    • The printer must be connected to a wired or wireless network with active internet access for HP web-connected features to work.
    • HP app features tied to cloud setup and Web Services require an active internet connection.

Note

HP also notes that for some printer app and cloud features, Web Services must be enabled. If Web Services is disabled, related app functions will not work
