Error 0xC4EB9004 on HP Smart Tank 530 Wireless / 533 is typically associated with an internal printer error, often related to the carriage/printhead system, sensors, or firmware

1. Power Reset the Printer

A full power reset can clear temporary firmware or sensor faults.

  • Make sure the printer is turned on.
  • With the printer on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord directly back into a wall outlet (avoid power strips).
  • Reconnect the power cord to the printer and turn it on.

2. Check Control Panel Lights and Icons

On Smart Tank 530/533, the control panel uses icons and lights to indicate the type of problem:

  • Ink/Printhead light and Printhead icons – indicate printhead issues.
  • Alert icon – indicates a general error.
  • Paper Error icon – out of paper or jam.
  • Wireless icons – wireless connection errors.

If you see combinations like blinking Ink/Printhead light + Alert + Printhead icons, that means one or both printheads need attention.

3. Inspect and Reseat the Printheads

Internal errors can be triggered by poorly seated printheads or remaining protective materials.

Steps:

  • Turn on the printer and make sure plain paper is loaded.

  • Open the front door, then open the printhead access door.

  • Wait for the carriage to move to the center and stop.
  • Push down on the carriage latch to unlock it.

Carefully press down on each printhead to release it and pull it straight up and out.

Important:

  • Hold the printhead by its sides, keep it upright to avoid leaks.

Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or ink nozzles.

Check that:

  • There is no tape left on contacts or nozzles.
  • There are no plastic plugs left on top of the printhead.

Reinsert each printhead:

  • Black printhead in the right slot.
  • Tri‑color printhead in the left slot.
  • Slide in at a slight upward angle and push up until it snaps into place.

  • Close the carriage latch firmly until it clicks.

  • Close the front door and check if the error clears.

These steps follow HP’s official printhead replacement and reseating procedure for Smart Tank 500/530/610 series.

4. Align Printheads (If Prompted)

  • After reseating or replacing printheads, misalignment can cause internal errors.
  • On touchscreen models (Smart Tank 530/533), follow the on‑screen prompts to:
    • Print an Alignment page.
    • Place the page on the scanner glass as shown.
    • Scan to complete alignment.

If alignment fails, the Resume light, Power light, A icon, and Alert icon blink. Press Resume to reprint the Alignment page and follow the instructions carefully.

5. Check for Paper or Carriage Jams

Hidden jams or carriage obstructions can generate carriage-related errors, sometimes presented as generic internal codes.

  • E3 / E4 errors (carriage/paper jam) show blinking Resume and Ink/Printhead lights. The resolution steps apply similarly:
  • Turn off the printer.
  • Open all access doors and inspect for jammed or torn paper inside:
    • Under the printhead access door.
    • Near the input tray and output area.
  • Remove any paper or foreign objects carefully.
  • Ensure you do NOT open the carriage latch when only checking for jams (unless you are reseating printheads).
  • Check underneath the printer only briefly, making sure ink tank caps are secure and the printer is not tilted longer than necessary.
  • Close all doors and press Resume to continue.

6. Verify Ink Levels and Tank Status

Low or empty tanks can contribute to printhead priming issues or error states:

  • If CMYK icons show and Ink icons blink or Ink/Printhead light is on, tanks are low or empty.
  • Refill the indicated tank(s) using the correct HP ink bottles, then allow the printer to prime.

7. Update/Check via HP App & Mobile Printing Support

Your Smart Tank 530 / 533 Wireless supports:

  • HP App (recommended)
  • HP Print Service Plugin
  • Apple AirPrint
  • Wi‑Fi Direct
  • HP ePrint
  • Samsung Print Service Plugin
  • Mopria Print Service

Use the HP App to:

  • Check printer status and error messages.
  • Run basic diagnostics (if available).
  • Confirm the printer firmware is up to date.
