- Troubleshooting: HP OfficeJet Pro 8715 Cannot Scan to Mac (m...
MacOS does not support scanning directly to a Mac from the printer control panel on ENVY Inspire, OfficeJet, and OfficeJet Pro models. Instead, you must use the HP app or Apple Image Capture on the Mac to scan.
Troubleshooting Steps
1. Understand Why “Scan to Computer” From the Panel Fails
On HP ENVY Inspire, OfficeJet, and OfficeJet Pro printers:
“macOS does not support scanning directly to a Mac from the control panel. As a scan alternative, use the HP app or Apple Image Capture.”
The “Scan to Computer” function from the printer’s touchscreen is only supported for Windows using HP Printer Assistant and HP Scan. That specific workflow is not available on macOS, so the printer either won’t show the Mac as a destination, or scan jobs will fail.
2. Use Supported Scan Methods on macOS
Instead of “Scan to Computer” from the 8715 control panel, use:
- The HP app on your Mac
- Apple Image Capture (built into macOS)
These methods let you initiate the scan from the Mac, which is the supported workflow for macOS.
3. Make Sure Drivers and Software Are Installed
- On your Mac, go to HP Software and Drivers:
- Enter your printer model (OfficeJet Pro 8715) and download the latest print and scan driver/software for macOS, if available.
- Install the software and follow the on‑screen prompts to connect the printer to your Mac (Wi‑Fi or USB).
If scanning does not work or the software cannot find the scanner, the HP guidance is:
“If scanning does not work or if the software cannot find the scanner, make sure to download the latest driver and software.”
4. Verify Network or USB Connection Hp ofiicejet pro 8715 no connecting to mac
To scan from the Mac:
- If using Wi‑Fi:
- Ensure the printer and Mac are on the same network.
- If using USB:
- Ensure the cable is securely connected and the printer appears in System Settings > Printers & Scanners on your Mac.
A missing or incorrect connection will prevent the Mac scanning software from discovering the printer.
5. Scan from the Mac (Recommended Workflow)
Because control‑panel “Scan to Computer” is not supported in macOS:
A. Scan Using the HP App
- Open the HP app on your Mac.
- Select your OfficeJet Pro 8715 as the device.
- Choose Scan within the app.
- Place the document on the scanner glass or in the ADF.
- For photos, use the glass (ADF can damage photos per HP guidance).
- Adjust settings (file type, resolution, destination folder) as needed.
- Click Scan, then Save the file to your desired location.
B. Scan Using Apple Image Capture (Alternative)
- Open Image Capture (Applications > Image Capture).
- Select your HP OfficeJet Pro 8715 in the device list.
- Place your document on the scanner.
- Adjust scan options (format, resolution, destination).
- Click Scan to save the file on your Mac.
6. If You Also Use Windows (Optional Cross‑Check)
If you have a Windows PC, scanning from the 8715 control panel to that PC is supported and can confirm the printer’s scan hardware is working:
- Install HP Easy Start on Windows and choose Full Software and Drivers (includes HP Printer Assistant and HP Scan).
- In HP Printer Assistant, go to Print, Scan & Fax > Scan, then Manage Scan to computer > Enable.
- On the printer control panel:
- Tap Scan > Computer, select the Windows PC name, choose Scan as PDF or Save as JPEG, then tap Send.
If this works on Windows but not on the Mac, it reinforces that the issue is the unsupported control‑panel workflow on macOS, not the scanner hardware.
