Microsoft Windows 11

Good afternoon,

I have an HP Color Laser MFP 179fnw for which the admin account login details no longer work. The default password/ID has been changed, but not saved properly. How can I reset the printer and access it again via the web interface as an administrator?

I like to hear it.

Thank you in advance

Hi @Kees_Kok,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Resetting the administrator password on your HP Color Laser MFP 179fnw printer typically involves performing a factory reset on the device. Here are the steps you can follow to reset your printer and regain access to the admin account.

Factory Reset via Printer Control Panel

Turn off the printer: Press the power button to turn off the printer.

Turn on the printer: Press the power button again to turn the printer back on.

Access the Service Menu:

  • Press and hold the Stop button until the Ready LED blinks (usually about 15-20 seconds).
  • The printer will enter the service mode.

Navigate to Factory Reset:

  • Use the navigation buttons on the printer’s control panel to find the Service Menu.
  • Select Service Menu and then navigate to the Factory Reset option.

Perform Factory Reset:

  • Confirm the selection to reset the printer to its factory default settings.
  • The printer will restart, and all settings including the administrator password will be reset to default.

Post-Reset Steps

Reconnect the Printer to Your Network:

  • After the reset, you will need to reconnect the printer to your Wi-Fi network. Follow the instructions in the printer's manual or on the printer's display to set up the network connection.

Access the Web Interface:

  • Once the printer is connected to the network, find the printer’s IP address. This can usually be found by printing a network configuration page from the printer’s control panel.
  • Open a web browser and enter the printer’s IP address in the address bar to access the web interface.

Log in with Default Credentials:

  • The default username is often admin.
  • The default password might be admin, password, or it might be blank (just leave the password field empty).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you Alden4,

My printer only has a cancel button, if I hold it down (doesn't matter how long) nothing happens. There are also no LEDs under the start buttons. Could this instruction be for a different printer?
