HP Color LaserJet Pro M454dw

We have 15 instances of 3 generations of HP Color LaserJet Pro printers, M452dn, M452dw, and M454dw.

All have the same bug/intentional "feature" that if you use them wirelessly, they shut down after a time. This is NOT a sleep mode, you cannot print to them without powering down and powering back up.

This is absolutely insane, and poor product design. These are printers we use in production, that don't run for days at a time, then print dozens up to hundreds of pages.

Many calls to HP tech support got me nowhere, other than a brush-off of this is a feature to save energy, and HP had no suggestions to fix this bug.

There is a workaround posted on another thread on 6-26-2016 by DJwishbone, that I've shortened:

Create a script to ping the printers ip address every 10 minutes (or really just once during the time you've set for shutdown). This will still let the printer go to sleep but will not let it full shut down.

If you know how to use a scheduled task, create a scheduled task on a computer on the network which executes a batch file that contains this instruction: ping -n 1 [INSERT IP OF PRINTER HERE]

If you don't know how to use, or don't have permissions to use a scheduled task, create a batch file (filename.bat) containing these lines:

@echo off

:loop

REM ping your printers ip once

ping -n 1 [INSERT IP OF PRINTER HERE]

REM wait for 600 seconds, change as desired

timeout /t 600

REM loop indefinitely

goto loop

In order to comply with EPA Energy Star ratings this has become pretty common, especially in units designed for home use.

Enterprise products that run FutureSmart firmware still retain the ability to turn off complete shutdown
