everything worked well but a few days ago my mac sopped recognizing printer as a printer. It is recognized as a disk. Only reinstalling of drivers helps but I can't do it every time I need to print something. I can't delete HP Smart Install as there is no such folder in settings.

Let us try these steps:

 

Update the printer firmware

Click here to download and install the latest firmware from your MAC.

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

 

Also, check for any software updates on MAC

Click the Apple icon > About This Mac > Software Update and install any available update.

 

Make sure the cable is directly connected between the MAC and the printer.

The use of a USB hub is not recommended. Also, make sure the cable is connected to a USB 2.0 port on your MAC.

Do you have an Anti-virus/firewall installed on the MAC?

You may check this in System Information > Applications.

 

  • Check if the printer is getting recognized by your MAC:
  1. From the Apple menu, choose About This Mac.
  2. Click System Report.
  3. Under the Hardware heading on the left side of the System Information window, click USB.

USB 3 devices appear under USB 3.0 Bus, and USB 2 devices appear under USB 2.0 Bus. The printer should be under the USB 2.0 Bus

I updated the firmware but according to my problem I need to do it every few days. Looks like my laptop stops seeing printer every few days.

Yes, I have antivirus.

I've checked - the printer is under USB 2.0 in my case

Kindly disable the anti-virus and then check if the MAC is able to detect and install the printer.

Once the anti-virus is disables, you may install the printer using the printer driver provided in the previous post.

I disabled it but it didn't help. Printer was under USB 3 a few days but it worked anyway. Then a few days after it stopped working again.
