The black ink cartridge on my HP All in one, 8610 deskjet ran out so I replaced it with an identical cartridge and now the printer won't work. It gives me the error message: "There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn printer off, then on. If problem persists, contact HP." I tried two new black cartridges and neither one worked. They were both H/P brand ink, the same as the empty one I removed.  If I put the empty cartridge back in, the printer tells me to change the empty ink cartridge.

How do I troubleshoot this problem if the printer is locked up and won't let me get past the error message? I can fix it myself if I can find out what is wrong with it.  This question was asked previously, but received no response.

Hi @Papabikerdude ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you've already tried some basic troubleshooting steps, but let's delve a bit deeper into potential solutions:

  • Restart the Printer: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary glitches. Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for a couple of minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on again.
  • Check for Firmware Updates: Ensure your printer's firmware is up to date. Sometimes, outdated firmware can cause compatibility issues with new cartridges. You can usually find firmware updates on the HP support website for your specific printer model. Update the firmware on an HP printer
  • Clean the Cartridge Contacts: Turn off the printer and carefully remove the new cartridge. Check the contacts on both the cartridge and inside the printer for any dirt or debris. Clean them gently with a soft, lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water. Make sure they are completely dry before reinstalling the cartridge.
  • Reset the Printer: Many HP printers have a reset option that can help resolve various issues. Look for a reset button or sequence in your printer's user manual or on the HP support website.
  • Inspect for Hardware Issues: If none of the above steps work, there may be a hardware issue with the printer itself. Check for any visible signs of damage, such as loose parts or broken components. If you're comfortable doing so, you can also open up the printer (while it's unplugged) to check for any obvious issues like disconnected cables or damaged parts.
