HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdw

Hello,

I’m experiencing an issue when trying to print from my HP Color LaserJet Pro M478f-9f using my Apple MacBook. Every time I attempt to print, I receive an error message stating “Expired Certificate - Check the printer for errors,” and the print job gets paused.

Could you please help me understand why this error is occurring and how I can resolve it? I suspect it might be related to the security certificate settings, but I’m unsure of how to proceed. Any guidance or steps to fix this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Im using Mac Os 15.1 Beta

I have the exact same problem - did you find a solution? I have tried restarting everything, checking wifi connections. I was able to print from my iPhone but not from my MacBook. I am using 15.0

I have the same issue printing from macOS 15 to OfficeJet Enterprise Color Flow MFP X585, getting the "expired certificate" error and it pauses the printing

Resolved this by updating the expired certificate under Networking - Authorization - Jetdirect Certificate

A self-signed certificate is fine if you have no other

Create a new self-signed certificate.  Warning: This operation will overwrite the currently installed certificate with a new self-signed certificate.

What does that mean? where do I find this?

Odd that the instructions only tell you how to do it from a Windows PC. If you have a MAC desktop you should see all the same options as a Windows PC in the EWS

When you print from macOS, an Encryption Credentials Expired error message may display and you are unable to print. This error displays when the Embedded Web Server, or EWS, has an expired certificate. For other helpful videos go to https://youtube.com/hpsupport. More support options for your HP ...

There is no "printer settings" tile in the current version of the HP Smart app.

The HP solutions didn't work for me, but I found the following elsewhere.  My printer model is different than yours, so you may need to find your IP address another way.

Solution 1  (If you don't want to mess with certificates)

  • Find and note the IP address for your printer.  For this device, touch the WiFi symbol in the upper right of the screen, then touch the  "Network WiFi on" symbol and scroll down to the device's IP address.
  • On your Mac:  Settings --> Printers & Scanners --> click on and remove the troublesome device
  • Settings --> Printers & Scanners --> Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax --> click the "IP" tab and fill in the fields as follows:
    • Address:  your device's IP address
    • Protocol:  IPP
    • Queue:  leave blank
    • Name: will default to your device's IP address
    • Location: leave blank
    • Use:  Generic PCL Printer
  • Click add.
  • You will now see this printer, identified by the IP address, under "Printers & Scanners"
  • Note that this will only work for printing, not scanning
  • If you want to use your device for scanning, add it back the conventional way, i.e., Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax --> Default, then follow the prompts.  You will now have the device listed twice under "Printers and Scanners," once with the HP device name (this one will scan but not print) and once labeled with the IP address (for printing).  I recommend giving the latter a more useful name, I went with "Use this one for printing."

Solution 2 (generate a certificate with a Mac)

  • go here
  • Note that this solution uses Chrome.  Chrome did not work for me, but Firefox did.
