Hi bbhuxley48,
I am sorry to hear you are having such difficulty using your Envy 4500 with your Mac.
Have you installed the full feature software and driver? If not, please use the following link to download and install it; HP ENVY 4500 series Full Feature Software and Drivers - Mac OS X v10.6, v10.7, v10.8, v10.9.
In order for me to better assist you I feel I need to better understand the issue and what you are up against. What version of Mac do you have, do you have the printer added to your System Preferences Print and Scan section, and what is happening when you try to print?
I know you said you are having trouble connecting the HP printer to the Mac, but please provide any details you can to help me assist you more efficiently.

Hi @Angiers
Can you elaborate a little?
- What version of Mac do you have?
- Wireless or USB?
- Are you getting an error message when you try to print?
- Do you have the printer added to your Print and scan, or is that the issue?
I need to better understand the issue in order to help, thanks.

I'm having the same issue with a brand new iMac. Here are the specs:
OS X Yosemite
Version 10.10.1
HP Printer Software Update Version 3.0
HP Utility Version 5.21.2
HP Scan Version 4.4.1 (21)
Wireless Connection via unsecured WiFi network
When I try to scan via HP Scan, the pop up box says "No Scanner Selected" in the Scanner: box. There is no option to select my printer.
When I open the HP Utility, there is no option to select Scanner Settings.
When I open Preview, the Import from Scanner... is greyed out.
As you can see, I have installed all the latest software and I'm on the latest version of OS X with the latest drivers. Please let me know what else I need to do to scan from my iMac.

Hi @JeffT55
Thanks for including the specs. I understand you have uninstalled and reinstalled, but I suggest performing a more comprehensive uninstall;
Scrub/ Uninstall
- Open the Applications folder > HP or Hewlett Packard folder > HP Uninstaller
- Click continue, click on one of the printers in the list.
- * Only do this step if you do not have any other HP Printers. Hold down Control, Option and Command, While holding the three buttons down,
- Click uninstall.
Reset Printing System
- Click the Apple icon (
), and then click System Preferences.
- In the Hardware section, click Print & Fax/Scan. The Print & Fax/Scan dialog box opens.
- Right-click (or Ctrl +click) in the left panel, and then click Reset printing system…
- Click OK to confirm the reset.
- Type the correct Name and Password.
- Click OK to reset the printing system. The Print & Fax dialog box shows no printer selected
- On the Dock, click Applications, and then click Utilities.
- Double-click Disk Utility.
- Highlight your hard drive/partition on the left (by default this is "Macintosh HD").
- Click the Repair Disk Permissions button at the bottom of the window.
- Once the repair is complete, restart the computer.
Restart the printer. Now you can download and install the printer software and install it. > HP-ENVY-4500-series_v12.34.0.dmg
When you add the printer, please ensure you are using the HP driver.
- Select Add other Printer or Scanner
- Select the printer you are adding and next to 'Use' you can select the printer driver
Please let me know if you can scan now. Thanks.

Has anybody found a solution for this? I've searched several foruns for a solution and still can't get the scanner to work.
Did all of the above and when entering the HP Utility setup during instalation I suppose it should've found my printer instead it just keeps searching and comes up with nothing.
I then try to "Specify Device Manually...", inserting the printer IP adress finds the printer and when I press "Add Printer" it already gives the warning message "Please note: An IP connection is supported. However, only the print feature will work properly."
On the next window the "Default settings" are blank so the only way to proceed is in the "IP" settings and from there I can successfully install the printer.
Unfortunatelly when going to the HP scan no scanners are found
and checking on the HP Utility no scanner settings are found
I'm running an Imac with OSX 10.10.2 and no peripherals attached.
I don't want to run a USB cable as the scanner is to be set up too far from the computer for that.
I've also successfully connected a PC to the scanner and it works fine.
Any help would be much apreciated. Thanks.

Hi @adieujoliecandy & @guyinnh
On the front screen of the printer please touch the Wireless icon. There are 4 icons across the top, the Wireless is the second one from the left. In the Wireless Menu arrow down to Advanced Settings. I would like to turn off the IPV6, arrow down to IPV6 and select OFF.
I have seen the IPV6 interfere with the Bonjour protocol many times, often times turning this feature off will resolve the issue and allow the Mac to see the printer over the network. Once the IPV6 is off try adding the printer again.
If the issue persists, let's try doing a power cycle of the network, computer, iPad, and printer.
- Leave the router on and unplug the routers power cable.NOTE:Do not reset the router.
- Press the Power button to turn off the HP printer.
- Turn off the computer.
After one minute, plug the router back in, once it's back on, turn the printer on and wait until the wireless is solid, then turn on the computer. At this point you can try adding the printer again.
If you still do not see the printer, the following might help;
Open the Embedded Web Server, and then adjust the advanced network settings for your printerFollow these steps to access the Embedded Web Server (EWS) using your printer's IP address, and then adjust the advanced network settings for your printer.
- Open an Internet browser (Safari, Chrome, Firefox, etc.) on your computer.
- Type your printer's IP address in the browser's address bar, and then press Enter. The EWS opens.
NOTE:
If you use a proxy server in your Internet browser, you might need to disable it to access the EWS.Figure : An example of an IP address typed into the browser's address bar - Click the Network tab from the EWS navigation menu.
- Under Advanced Settings on the left side of the screen, click Bonjour.
- Click the drop-down menu next to Bonjour Highest Priority Service, select 9100 Printing, and then click Apply.
- Under Advanced Settings, click Bonjour to confirm that the changes applied.
- Source
I hope one of these recommendations helps.
