Hi @Deborah128,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you've encountered a frustrating issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 printer. The error message you're receiving indicates a problem with the printer or its print system, and it's asking you to turn it off and on again, which you've already done without success.
Here are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot the issue.
- Check for paper jams: Sometimes, a small piece of paper or debris can cause the printer to malfunction. Open the printer's access door and check for any paper jams or obstructions. If you find any, carefully remove them.
- Reset the printer: Try resetting the printer to its factory settings. You can usually find instructions on how to do this in the printer's user manual or on the HP website.
- Update printer firmware: Make sure your printer's firmware is up to date. Sometimes, updating the firmware can resolve compatibility issues and bugs that may be causing the error.
- Inspect ink cartridges: Ensure that all ink cartridges are properly installed and have sufficient ink levels. If any cartridges are empty or low, replace them.
- Clean printhead: If the printer has a removable printhead, try removing it and cleaning it according to the HP instructions. A clogged printhead can cause printing problems.
If none of these steps resolve the issue, it's possible that there may be a hardware problem with the printer.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
