I assume the printer in on the network (internet) and you have 4.xx.01.49 or higher
try this
2. Open safari and enter the IP address of your printer.
http or https
3. Go to the SyncThruWeb Service (SWS) main home page.
Login as Admin in SyncThruWeb Service.
NOTE: Login using the Administrator ID and Password established
during initial machine setup.
4. Click [Maintenance] on the top menu.
And then click [Firmware Upgrade] or Application Management > Application
5. Click Add button
6. Click [Browse].
Choose installation file by browsing file system. And click OK button
7. The firmware update will start.
Once the f/w update is complete, the machine power-off and power-on automatically
=====the above is just a guess as it was how one would upgrade in windows on the network=====
Alternately, install parallels and windows 10 or 11. No need to buy license for windows as using it for firmware install.

Sorry, but either I was unclear, or you did not read my question.
I know how to update the firmware. The point is: there are no more firmware images I could download on the HP Support Site for this printer. They got removed. Where are they?
Does anybody have version 02.29 for example?

Latest firmware from 2017 V4.00.04.05 is available from hp.com but you need to select WIN OS and you can download zip file unzip it and run a upgrade using SyncThru web service. If you choose MAC as you OS there is no firmware to download.

Thank you Valsimot!
This is, on one hand, helpful.
Unfortunately Version V 04.05 is not installable without an Update to V 03.XX before. As other users reported, also on this forum, with a printer that is running on V01.XX or V02.XX you get an "invalid firmware" error, when you try to install V04.05.
Does anybody have access to an Version before V04.05?

I do not know of any printer firmware historical version downloads at HP websites.
Historical BIOS downloads are available at HP, but not all HP PCs support rollback of bios.
There are 3rd party sites that have historical HP printer firmware but I would not trust any of them.
you can always contact an HP agent and ask

Select the product you need help with and scroll down to support options.
Select "Contact us". You can change country and language if necessary.

According to other users, there are, like 03.25. But you might be right, that these versions were never available as downloads and only came from factory.
Someone wrote me, that the available 04.05 can only be installed on printers of the last production year, when Samsung Printers was already HP. If so, it is not documented.
So unfortunately it seems, there is no working update for the majority of this model.
