4301 Cutting off Copy Borders

I bought a 3301 LaserJet and found that it wouldn’t copy or scan a document to the full extent of the page - it chops off about 3-5mm in the margins on any side. I called support, ran through the troubleshooting steps with the advisor. Eventually they determined that they would send me a new printer. I exchanged printers and found the replacement exhibited the exact same issues.  After two replacements HP sent me a 4301 series, saying there were issues with the 3301 series. Receiving the 4301, I tried to copy — same problem. 

i find it hard to believe a production printer has this glaring of an issue. Before I reengage HP on the matter, has anyone had this issue and found a resolution?

after a few days of investigation, I found that the HP app on the Mac will allow you to scan a document to the edge of the paper on the flatbed. This implies that the machine is capable of “seeing” the edge but not printing or copying beyond the 4mm margin you mention.  Why this is a limitation I do not know but looking at the specs of many laser printers online (of different mfgs) this seems to be a universal characteristic of a laser printer.

No consumer level laser printers will do edge to edge printing. That is a limitation of toner control on the edge of the paper. Even in professional settings typically borderless printing is achieved by printing on larger media and cutting it down.

As for scanning, there are limitations on the ADF assemblies in terms of paper control so scanning to the edge is impossible to ensure perfect scans. That is also the reason that ADF scans are limited to 300DPI in most cases.
