I'm in a freaking twilight zone from hell with this printer.  All I want to do is scan.  The printer shows as offline, even though it will print.  But it wont' scan.  I don't know how to get it to show as "online" and to scan.  I've tried "Diagnose & Fix," I've tried the HP Print & Scan Doctor, which enjoys telling me to reboot my computer without actually being useful, I've tried to download new drivers, but the HP website alas can't find drivers for the 7740.  I've fought this printer for several weeks now.  Help!

Sure, you may either try the HP Smart app or the full-featured driver to scan.

To check the connectivity,

  • Obtain the IP address of the printer
  • Type the IP address at the top of your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
  • If you get any security notification, click on show details/advanced and 'proceed to this website'.
  • Go to Scan > Try scanning.

Let me know how it goes.

@RL133, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

  • Make sure the printer and the PC are connected to the same wireless network.
  • This printer supports only 2.4GHz network. So, the PC should be on the 2.4GHz network.
  • If you have a Dual-band router and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks share the same name/SSID, the printer will not be able to connect to the network. In this case, contact your Internet service provider to assign different names to both the networks.
  • Restart the wireless router, the printer, and the PC

Use the HP Smart app to scan from your Win PC

Click here to download and know more about the app.

Alternatively, the full-feature printer driver can be downloaded from here if not already installed.

To know how to scan using the full-feature software, click here.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I'm not using a wireless network.  The printer is connected to my network with a static IP address over a wired UTP connection to my switch.  I guess I will try the full-feature driver, all whopping 180 megs of it.

It shouldn't be this hard.

I have always been able to see and interact with the printer by going to the EWS page.  Just couldn't scan.  After downloading and installing the full driver from the link you provided I am now able to scan using the HP Scan app.  My problem appears to be solved.  Thank you very much for your help.
