HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Wide Format All-In-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

the document feeder sensor in the 7740W stopped working so the printer does not detect loaded papers. I noticed over the last couple of weeks that I had to push the papers in repeatedly for them to be detected until it now just stopped completely.

I assume there is a sensor that needs cleaning but I'm not sure where it is. I'm thinking that it is the separator pad but that one is difficult to clean without taking the document feeder apart.

It would be helpful if someone could tell me where the sensor is and the best way to clean it.

Welcome to HP Community

I have gone through your Post and would like to help

Please try these steps

- Turn on the printer.
- Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
- Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the printer. If your printer has a network or wireless connection, leave it connected.
- Remove the ink cartridges from the printer.
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and from the wall outlet or power strip.
- Wait at least 60 seconds.
- Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to a wall outlet.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
- Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
- The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
- Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
- Reinsert the ink cartridges, and then close the ink cartridge access door.

Also ensure the printer has the latest Firmware. Link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c02919168

Next follow the instruction in step 2 from this Link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c05170450 to clean the paper rollers

Hi KrazyToad,

and thanks for trying to assist. I did all the steps in your solution but it still doesn't work. I also tried Step 3 in your second link (Clean the paper feed rollers) but still the same.

The printer appears to be in good condition and I can copy and scan from the scanner glass. And I can print on both sides of the paper. The only thing missing is that little chime of detection when I put the papers into the document feeder.

Do you know which component it is that detects the papers? I have narrowed it down to such a small area but can still not figure out which one it is.

Hi @Jan_I

Thanks for replying.

I appreciate you trying the suggested steps this seems like Hardware issue with the ADF, I'd suggest you contact HP in your region regarding the service options for your printer.

If you are having trouble navigating through the above options, it's most likely because the device is out of warranty. If yes? please send me a private message with the region you are contacting us from. Check next to your profile name, you should see a little blue envelope, please click on it.
