90% of the time my first scan fails. the second try almost always works with no failure.  No restart, just back arrow and rescan

It sounds like you're experiencing a frustrating issue with your HP Smart Tank 7301's scanning feature. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

 

Update Drivers: Make sure you have the latest drivers for your printer. You can download them from the HP website using this link

Check Connections: Ensure that all cables (USB or network) are securely connected and that your printer is properly connected to your network if using Wi-Fi.

Reset the Printer: Sometimes, resetting the printer can resolve temporary glitches. Turn it off, unplug it for a minute, then plug it back in and turn it on.
