A3 paper is supposed to work -- the instructions to load this size paper are in the user manual.
There is a button inside the front of the tray to release / extend the tray.

The "trick" is perhaps Step 3 -
3. Press the button lower right of tray, pull out the input tray extension.
Side Bar - Decent A3 printing / quality
If you are using Windows, be sure you have installed the Full Feature Software AND that the Printer Properties are set to use the "HP" driver as opposed to the IPP / Class driver.
