HP Officejet J4680 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have an All-in-One that appears in the Device Manager as both an imaging device and a printer—so far, so good.  However, my other All-In-One, the Officejet J4680, appears as a printer only.  A check of Devices and Printers shows both devices listed, but when I bring up the context menus for each, the Officejet is missing its scanning options (Start scan, Scan profiles..., and Scan properties). I ran the latest version of the Print and Scan Doctor. It said that I needed to install Solution Center from the disc, so I did. I quickly learned that the Solution Center needs Adobe Flash installed in order to work which I don't (and won't) have. I ran the Print and Scan Doctor again, but it did the check on the other device despite my having chosen the Officejet. I'm wondering it was because it doesn't recognize the Officejet as a scanner. Upon checking the device page for this model, there are no software updates. I'm out of ideas. How do I force my laptop to recognize my All-In-One as a scanner?

Thank you for posting on HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, I appreciate your efforts to try and resolve the issue.

I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:

Root level uninstall and reinstall printer drivers

  • Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Officejet printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
  • Then press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" and press enter.
  • Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
  • Again, go to run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

To reinstall, click here.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Doing this won't uninstall my other All-In-One, too? How can I differentiate which of the two's folders and files I'm deleting? The Envy is installed correctly, and I don't want to risk screwing that up, also. Is there another way?

Thank you for posting back.

Performing the root level step will uninstall all conflicted drivers. Once you reinstall the printer drivers will correct the issue.

Okay, I took EVERYTHING off my laptop (complete reset) and have not yet connected the newer All-In-One. However, I did install the All-In-One with the scanning problems, and it's doing the same thing. The printer works perfectly, but not the scanner. The scanning options are still missing in the device's properties. The HP Solution Center opened, telling me I needed an Adobe Flash update, but of course the link didn't work, as Flash has been discontinued. So now what?
