HP DeskJet 3721 All-in-One Printer
macOS 10.13 High Sierra

HP deskjet 3721 is printing fine but when I try to scan, all the scanned documents are completely black. It doesn't matter what side is facing up, I've tried multiple ways to insert the document and they all come out the same. Even tried changing the dpi settings and colour but same results.

I have successfully scanned with this printer but this was a while ago.Really frustrating as I've resorted to taking photos of documents with my phone which isn't ideal.

Hi @AHELY,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If all your scans from your HP Deskjet 3721 printer are coming out completely black, there are a few possible causes for this issue. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try.

  • Check the scanner glass: Make sure the scanner glass is clean and free from any smudges, fingerprints, or debris. Use a soft, lint-free cloth and a mild glass cleaner to clean the glass thoroughly.
  • Adjust scanner settings: Open the scanning software or application on your computer and check the settings. Ensure that the scanner is set to scan in color or grayscale, depending on your requirements. Also, make sure the scan resolution is set appropriately.
  • Test with different documents: Try scanning different types of documents, such as a color photo, a grayscale image, or a black-and-white text document. This will help determine if the issue is specific to a certain document type.
  • Update printer drivers: Make sure you have the latest drivers and software installed for your printer. Visit the official HP website, locate the support section, and search for your printer model to find and download the most up-to-date drivers.
  • Restart the printer and computer: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary glitches. Turn off your printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for a few seconds, and then plug it back in. Also, restart your computer to clear any temporary issues.
  • Reset printer settings: On the printer's control panel, navigate to the settings or setup menu and look for an option to restore the default settings. Select this option to reset the printer settings to their original state. Note that this may vary depending on your specific printer model.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
