Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).
Common problems HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to scan
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to Scan.

I used to be able to go directly from the HP scan desktop icon to my scanner.  Suddenly an icon appeared on my HP scan doctor saying it wants to make a change to my computer.  I am worried it I allow it my computer/printer/scanner will be compromised.  I can scan, just have to go through the cumbersome process of allowing it to find why it is not scanning (which it is), and then test the scanner and it works, as I knew it would.  Am I overthinking the mess up my computer thing if I allow scan doctor to change something on my computer?

Hi @Phyl17

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Your caution is absolutely valid, especially when it comes to software making changes to your system. HP Print and Scan Doctor is an official HP troubleshooting tool, and when it asks for permission to modify settings, it’s usually trying to fix detected issues—like restoring lost printer connections, updating drivers, or adjusting configurations.

What is HP Print and Scan Doctor changing?

  • It typically updates drivers, resets print spoolers, or modifies registry entries.
  • If you’re curious, check the logs or notifications before approving anything.

Do You Need the Fix?

  • Since you can still scan, the tool may just be running unnecessary diagnostics.
  • If ignoring it doesn’t affect your workflow, skipping the changes might be fine.

Potential Risks?

  • While HP’s software is reputable, automated changes can sometimes cause unexpected issues.
  • If the scanner stops working after granting permission, you may need to undo or reinstall drivers.

  • If everything works fine, you can skip using HP Print and Scan Doctor unless issues arise.
  • If you ever approve changes and experience problems, try rolling back drivers or restoring settings.
  • For peace of mind, ensure your system restore points are enabled—this allows you to undo any changes easily.

So, no, you’re not overthinking it—it’s always good to be cautious with system modifications! Let me know if you’d like help checking your printer settings manually instead.

Thank you for your suggestion.  Unfortunately I cannot access the scanner at all now.  Neither desktop icon allows me to go any further than wanting me to allow the app to make changes to my device -- HP scan doctor 5.7.4 .  It details diagnostics, so I am wondering if it is an update.  Again I am cautious about answering "yes".  I have printed up how to restore the system, which I have had to do several years ago for some other reason, so I believe I can do that if I  have to.

You have been very helpful and kind.

You are very Welcome!

I completely understand your caution—it’s always good to be mindful when granting apps permission to make system changes. HP Print and Scan Doctor typically requests admin privileges to diagnose and fix issues, but if you're unsure, you can check its legitimacy by downloading it directly from HP’s official site here.

If your scanner still isn’t accessible, a few alternatives to try:

  • Manually reinstall scanner drivers from HP’s website rather than relying on Scan Doctor.
  • Use Windows Troubleshooter: Go to Settings → Devices → Printers & Scanners, then select your scanner and run troubleshooter.
  • Try using a different scanning application, such as Windows Fax & Scan or the HP Smart app, to see if it detects your scanner.

You seem very thorough in your troubleshooting approach, and having a system restore plan ready is a great backup in case anything unexpected happens. I appreciate your kind words—I'm happy to help, and I’ll be here if you need further guidance!
