Hi @TheMrsJ,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I know how frustrating it is when your brand-new HP printer won’t scan from the Document Feeder (ADF), especially after you’ve set everything up and expect it to work seamlessly. Let’s go through the most effective steps to fix this.

Steps to Fix HP Printer Not Scanning from the Document Feeder

1. Check Document Feeder Setup

  • Make sure the documents are loaded face up or as indicated by the feeder icon.
  • Align the pages properly and avoid bent or torn edges.
  • Remove any staples or paper clips.

2. Inspect and Clean the ADF

  • Open the ADF cover and check for paper jams or debris.
  • Clean the rollers and separator pad using a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water.
  • Let them dry for 2 minutes before closing the cover.

3. Test ADF from Printer Control Panel

  • On the printer screen, select ScanSource: Document Feeder.
  • If this works, the issue may be with the HP Smart app settings.

4. Update Firmware and HP App

  • Go to Official HP® Support and install the latest firmware.
  • Update the HP Smart app on your PC or mobile device.

5. Reconfigure HP App

  • Open HP Smart → Settings > Add/Remove Printer → Remove your printer.
  • Re-add the printer and select Document Feeder as the scan source.
  • Ensure scan settings (resolution, size) are correct.

6. Run HP App

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
