When scanning or copying, a solid black line appears from top to bottom.  I have wiped glass and done maintenance through settings options.  How do I clear this line from appearing?

Hi,

Thanks for using the HP Support Community.

Were you using the Automatic Document Feeder when that happens?

@Kate52,

Thanks for reaching out to the HP Support community!

  • What is the Model of your printer?
  • Do you get these lines while printing also?
  • The lines that you see, are they horizontal or vertical?

Please provide the above information to assist you with accurate resolution.

Cheers!

I have an HP Envy 4520. The line is vertical and only appears when I scan or copy.

@Kate52,

Let's try these steps:

Step1: Power Reset

  • Make sure this printer is plugged into a direct wall, not a surge protector.
  • Turn the printer on.
  • Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. Wait at least 60 seconds
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  • Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  • Try to make a copy and check
  • If the issue persists proceed to the next step

Step 2: Clean the scanner glass

             Clean the scanner glass and underside of the scanner lid with a soft, lint-free cloth sprayed with glass cleaner.

  • Turn the printer off, then disconnect the power cord.

  • Lift the scanner lid.

  • Spray a soft, lint-free cloth with glass cleaner, then wipe the scanner glass, glass strip (if present), the white backing under the scanner lid, and the white strip under the lid (if present) until clean, dry, and streak-free.

  • Reconnect the power cord, turn on the printer, then close the scanner lid completely.

  • Load the original document or photo, then try to scan. Make sure the original document or photo is in good condition and free of tears, creases, folds, staples, or tape.

  • Try to scan or make a copy.

Let me know if this helps.

OfficeJet 4650 All-in-One Printer.  Only when copying or scanning.  It is just a total black page.  Wasting a lot of ink here.

@bswanous,

It could be an issue with the scanner component.

Check if the scanner bulb is lit and if the scanner bar is moving

  • Make sure this printer is plugged into a direct wall, not a surge protector.
  • Open the scanner lid, push copy.
  • Check if you see a light under the scanner lid and if that moves across the glass once you push copy.

Let me know what happens.
