With my the software that came with my old HP Photosmart 7510 I could easily set a custom scan size (e.g. 8.5" wide x 3.5" high for standard bank checks). Now that I've 'upgraded' to an ENVY 7640 and HP AiO software, although I can find the scan size settings, the only options are the usual 'letter', 'legal' and a few other standards...no place for me to set a custom scan size. Did I miss something, or are custom scan sizes no longer supported? Thanks in advance.

Scan and Capture is limited to the sizes provided in the software.
HP Scan Extended is an exceptional scanning program that provides "custom" scan options -- the program can "auto detect" and extract the size of the scanned document / image during the scan function.
Download and install the program - place your image / document on glass > start the program

You are welcome.
The HPSE is similar to some of the newer HP Full Feature Software (model dependent).
Be sure to check out the nice "Auto Detect Size" option for your Page Size.
Example - Officejet Pro 8630 - Auto Detect Size
HP_Scan_Extended_Shortcut_1
In addition to being able to detect the boundaries of photos placed on the printer screen (separate by at least 1/2 inch), the software can detect and extract images from a page of text (for example, from a magazine page). Will this "super" extract work for everything? Honestly, I don't know, I have had success with it in testing.
One more software worth a mention:
HP Scan and Capture - Windows Store - Requires Windows 8 or higher
Although not quite as brilliant as the HPSE software, Scan and Capture is a nice program.
Scans both jpg (JPEG) and PDF documents.
Examples:
Scan_and_Capture_Preferences
Scan_and_Capture_0B
Scan_and_Capture_1
and
Link and Download NAPS2
Not another PDF Scanner – free program scans PDF files and image(s) as .jpeg or PDF file(s). Includes OCR. Download, save, and install to use.
Nice program - free. If you want to use the "Import" function, know that you must have used NAPS2 to scan and save the original file. Meh. Free programs sometimes have restrictions. Smiling.
Example
NAPS2_Import_2C
Happy Scanning!

I downloaded & installed the 'HP Scan Extended' software on my Windows 10 laptop. Unfortunately, here's what I saw when I tried to run it.....
The original 'HP Scan and Capture' software the came with my HP ENVY 7640 still works, but the orignal problem (doesn't support custom scan sizes) persists.
Ideas?

HPSE is dependent on the original Full Feature Software having been installed.
The error seems to indicate that HPSE is not detecting the drivers for that software.
No, other than reinstalling the main Full Feature Software, removing and reinstalling the HPSE, I do not know what is wrong.
