Yes, the printer can do this.

If the installed Full Feature Software includes the OCR feature, it will be found in your HP Scan program (Part of the Printer Assistant shortcut icon on the Desktop named for your printer).

If the Full Feature Software installation package contains the OCR software, it will either be installed along with the other printer software OR you can select Custom Installation (when starting the software install) > Find and Select the OCR software component.

How to Scan (Windows)

If your Full Feature Software does NOT contain the OCR feature, you can install a paid or free version of the OCR software (look for OCR software on the Internet in your region).

Free OCR  Free OCR (from Paperfile)

OCR to Word  http://www.ocrtoword.com/

From Microsoft Store: (a9t9) Free OCR Software

The following software provides limited OCR features built into the program:

NAPS2 -- Not another PDF Scanner – free program scans PDF files and image(s) as .jpeg or PDF file(s).  Includes OCR.  Download, save, and install to use.

__________________________________________________________

Depending on your printer software, the following subset / version of the HP Scan program might provide OCR:

HP Scan Extended – Exceptional free HP scan program:  HP Scan Extended features include (and are not limited to): Single, Multiple scans, Image and PDF scans, Auto-Detect (extracts image / document boundary). Download, save, and install to use.

NOTES

  • HPSE is an older subset of the printer software; features are very similar to scan software included in 2015 or newer Full Feature Software packages.
  • If you have the newer version of the scan software inside your Full Feature Software, use that: Printer Assistant shortcut icon on Desktop (named for printer) > Scan a document or image (wording varies).
  • Although the HPSE program works as a separate program, HPSE is dependent on the infrastructure provided by the printer software. The Full Feature Software for your printer should be installed before installing HPSE.

Great advice Dragon-Fur and so very much appreciated. For some reason the HP icon to guide me through capabilities of the  all-in-one device was not on the desktop; Once I sorted that out and with your excellent help I solved the problem and was able to correct a document and make my wonderful neighbor very pleased. BET of Austin Texas.

And another factor that could be contributory: I will be 87 years old in a few days and still enjoy the contributions I make to society through the BOINC system.

Using the HP Scan Extended (HPScanExt.msi) also worked for my OfficeJet Pro 8035.  Thanks!!

P.S.  Also using Windows 10 64 bit.
