Hi @WBBL,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

To address the issue of not being able to scan from your Mac running OS Sonoma 14.2.1 to your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978, let's go through a series of troubleshooting steps. These steps are designed to identify and possibly resolve the issue:

Check Printer Connection: Ensure that your printer is properly connected to your Mac, either via USB or over your network (Wi-Fi or Ethernet). If you're using a network connection, make sure both devices are on the same network.

Restart Devices: Sometimes, simply restarting your computer and printer can resolve the issue. Turn off both devices, wait a minute, and then turn them back on.

Update Printer Firmware: HP regularly releases firmware updates for their printers. Check if there's an available update for your OfficeJet Pro 6978 by visiting the HP Support website and entering your printer model. Follow the instructions to update the firmware if needed.

Update Mac Software: Ensure your Mac's software is up to date. Go to System Preferences > Software Update to check for and install any available updates.

Check HP Software and Drivers: Make sure you have the latest HP software and drivers installed for your printer. HP provides a software package called HP Easy Start to help with this. Visit the HP Support website, find your printer model, and download HP Easy Start or the latest drivers for your printer.

Use HP Smart App: HP Smart app can help manage printing and scanning tasks. Download HP Smart from the Mac App Store, and follow the setup instructions to add your printer.

Scan Settings and Preferences: Check the scan settings in the HP software or the application you're using to scan. Ensure the correct scanner (your OfficeJet Pro 6978) is selected and that the settings match your scanning requirements.

Remove and Re-add Printer: Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners. Remove your OfficeJet Pro 6978 by clicking the minus (-) button, then re-add it by clicking the plus (+) button. This can sometimes resolve communication issues.

Check for Scanner Software Issues: If the issue persists, it might be related to the scanning software. Try scanning using another application, such as Apple's Image Capture, to see if the issue is specific to one software.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
