I have an Officepro 8600 plus and a new Imac (using Sequoia 15.5). I can print from my Imac to the HP with no issue. However, I cannot scan directly from my printer/scanner to the computer. I can use the HP Smart App as a work around, but until I got my new Imac this week I could scan directly from the HP printer/scanner without using the Smart App (using the Smart App isnt' working well with longer scans). I deleted and re-installed the printer and have the same issue--I can print fine, but it's not letting me scan.
Would appreciate if anyone has any tips. Thank you.

@JR204, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Based on your issue, being able to print but not scan directly from your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus to your new iMac running macOS Sequoia 15.5, this is likely due to changes in macOS that affect how scanning is handled, especially with older printer models.
Here are some steps and tips to help resolve the issue:
Use AirPrint for Scanning
Your printer supports AirPrint, which macOS uses for both printing and scanning without needing HP drivers. However, sometimes macOS doesn't automatically enable scanning.
- Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners
- Select your OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus
- Click Options & Supplies > Utility > Open Scanner
- If the scanner doesn’t open, remove the printer and re-add it using AirPrint:
- Click the “+” button to add a printer
- Select your printer from the list
- Ensure “Use” is set to AirPrint, not HP driver
Check HP Smart App Permissions
Since you mentioned HP Smart works but not reliably for long scans:
- Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Files and Folders
- Ensure HP Smart has access to Documents and Removable Volumes
- Also check Full Disk Access under Privacy and add HP Smart if not already listed
Try Image Capture (Built-in macOS App)
- Open Image Capture from Applications
- Select your printer from the left panel
- Try scanning from there
- If it doesn’t appear, it may indicate a driver or compatibility issue
Update Printer Firmware
Outdated firmware can cause compatibility issues:
- Visit the HP Software and Driver Downloads page
- Search for OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus
- Download and install the latest firmware (you may need to do this from a Windows PC if macOS doesn’t support the update tool)
Reset Printing System (if all else fails)
- Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners
- Right-click (or Control-click) in the printer list and choose “Reset printing system…”
- Re-add your printer using AirPrint
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Thank you @Max3Aj.
I tried to use AirPrint for Scanning but when I clicked on Options & Supplies>Utility, there was no option to "open scanner" (only option was to "open printer utility") . Is there anything I can do?
I then tried your next idea, checking HP Smart App Permissions. But, when I got to the "files and folders" the HP Smart App was not shown as one of the applications to access. Any ideas?
Thx Again,
Jeff
