I ran scan doctor and it said this: "this tool is unable to find the HP Scan application software on your computer". I was able to scan 3 weeks ago with no problems. Thanks!

HI @smitty74,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It seems like the HP Scan application software might have been uninstalled or corrupted, which is why the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool is unable to find it. Here are steps to resolve the issue and get your scanning functionality back:
1. Check for the HP Scan Application
- Search for HP Scan: Check if the HP Scan application is still installed on your computer. Look for it in your Start menu or Applications folder.
- Reinstall HP Scan Software: If it’s not found, you may need to reinstall it.
2. Reinstall HP Scan Software
- Download Latest Drivers and Software: Go to the HP Support website and download the latest full-featured software package for your printer model.
- Enter your printer model number.
- Select your operating system.
- Download and install the full-feature software package, which includes the HP Scan application.
- Install the Software: Run the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions to install the software. This should include the necessary scanning drivers and applications.
3. Run HP Print and Scan Doctor Again
- After reinstalling the software, run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool again to check if it resolves any remaining issues.
4. Check Scanner Connection and Settings
- USB Connection: If you are using a USB connection, ensure the cable is securely connected. Try using a different USB port or cable if possible.
- Wireless Connection: If you are using a wireless connection, make sure your printer is connected to the same network as your computer. You can check this through the printer’s control panel or settings.
5. Restart Devices
- Restart Printer and Computer: Sometimes, simply restarting your printer and computer can resolve connectivity issues.
6. Update Operating System
- Check for OS Updates: Ensure your operating system is up to date, as updates can fix compatibility issues with peripheral devices like printers and scanners.
7. Use Windows Built-in Scan Utility (Windows Only)
- Windows Fax and Scan: If you are using a Windows computer, you can use the built-in Windows Fax and Scan application as an alternative to check if the scanner hardware is working.
- Open the Start menu.
- Search for “Windows Fax and Scan” and open it.
- Try to scan a document using this application.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hello! Thanks for the reply. I did everything you suggested. Everything looked good. But when I tried to scan using HP Smart, which I had been using in the past, it still gave me printer not recognized and maybe something else. So I tried using the Windows scan option you suggested at the end and this works fine. Just not sure what the problem with HP Smart is. Used this to scan 3 weeks ago and now nothing. But, I'm OK with using the Windows scan option. Again, thanks!
