HP Scanjet 4850
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello everyone,

I have a HP Scanjet 4850 flatbed scanner and have for a long time. It works great still! The only issue is that the software that was provided with the scanner, HP Photosmart Premier 7.0 is supposed to be installed on Windows 98 and upwards (to Windows XP). Back when I was running Windows 2000 and Windows XP as my main operating systems, that was fine and there wasn't anything newer at the time but once Vista, 7,8 etc etc came along, the software could never be installed on those OS's with the installer throwing up an error moaning that it requires Windows 98 to Windows XP (as the installer doesn't know the newer versions of Windows).

For however long, I've had the software just installed on my old computer running windows XP which has been fine but it's very annoying as when I just want to quickly scan something in, I have to setup the old PC, load it up, wait for the scanner to warm up, scan my stuff then transer it all to my main Windows 10 PC. (Windows 10 Pro, 64 bit version 20h2).

So my question is how can I install the software on Windows 10? I am aware that I can install the basic drivers on Windows 10 and below but as it states, they're the basic drivers. Just the bare minimum so that you can use it with a program such as Windows Fax and Scan which is quite limited... Unless you literally just need to scan something. But I like to have the HP software as I can make all my adjustments before/after I scan and it just works better overall.

I'm not bothered about switching programs, I'm not a person who has to stay with their twenty year old software because they don't like change. Afterall, I use computers everyday...! But I don't want to have the basic drivers and I don't want to have to buy a new scanner just because this one is 'old and unsupported'.

So far I have tried the usual compatibility mode and although it detects that it's Windows XP compatibility, it gives me another error telling me "This software cannot be installed using the 'Run as...' command."

Ahhh!

Sorry if that was a bit long and off topic a bit... I got a bit carried away there! Hopefully there's something I can do to get this software working but by the looks of things, I don't know.

Thanks everyone!!

Hi@Chris, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Try these steps to re-install the printer driver -

1. In the search box, type and open "Uninstall a Program".

2. Look for HP Printer software.

3. Right-click to uninstall.

4. In the search box, type, and open “Devices and Printers”.

5. In the Devices and Printers, look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose “Delete” or “Remove Device”.

6. Open the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7. Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”).

8. Click on the "Drivers" tab.

9. Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click “Remove” at the bottom.

10. Select Ok.

11. Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows.

12. Close Devices and Printers Once the software and drivers are removed.

13. Restart the computer.

14. Download and install the software and drivers from here.

15. Click on the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions.

Hi @, thanks for the response!

I can get the basic drivers for the scanner installed, but I am looking to install the HP Photosmart Premier 7.0 software. The basic drivers are fine but that software lets me change settings of my scans and it has the functionality to scan in negatives, that can't be done with the standard Windows Fax and Scan program, only with that HP program...

The issue is the program is expecting to be installed on Windows XP and I am attempting to install it on Windows 10, so the program doesn't know that Windows 10 is in fact a newer OS and just tells me that I need to have Windows 98 to Windows XP installed to install the software. (Tried compatibility mode too, gave me a different error instead).

I can carry on using the software on my XP machine but it's a pain to move the pictures to and from different computers really...

But thank you again for the response! Hopefully I'll get this software to install at some point.
