Can't scan with Deskjet 2721

I have a Deskjet 2721, a couple of years old, linked by wi-fi to my desktop and my partner's ipad.  Mostly it works fine, but occasionally when I try to scan something, HPSmart tells me that it cannot connect with the printer.  Today I scanned one document successfully, but got this message when I tried to scan a second one.  HPSmart then tells me the printer is offline, but I can still print from the computer. Windows 10 tells me the printer is online.

HPSmart also suggests that I "finish the installation", but here I hit another problem.  It asks for the printer PIN and tells me I can find it on the back of the ink cartridge access door.  When I enter this PIN, the message says "PIN not recognised.  Try again."

I have learned elsewhere that I can get the printer to print a temporary pin by holding down both the wi-fi button and the info button.  This new PIN is valid for 120 seconds.  But when I submit this PIN in the installation, I'm told "Cannot connect with printer."  and I notice the wi-fi light is flashing, after having printed the PIN.  It's like a game to print the PIN, and then try to get the wi-fi light to stay on, and enter the PIN in the installation routine all within 120 seconds.  No success so far.

Going mad here.  Any suggestions?

I understand that you are unable to scan using HP Smart on iPad, I am glad to assist you.

Update the HP Smart app

If the issue still persists, Uninstall and reinstall the HP Smart app on iPad.
