Ever since I reluctantly signed onto the ink program, my printing software changed. Now I'm trying to scan, and I'm told that the scanner is already in use. What does that mean? When I click to got more help, I get a message saying something went wrong displaying the page. My printer slipped silently out of warrantee (I'd been on a support plan for many years previously), but I understood the ink program included some level of support. How do I get help? I need to scan.

Hi @ChicagoRob

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I'm really sorry you're running into this scanning issue—it’s especially frustrating when you're ready to scan and the software throws up roadblocks.

Let’s walk through a few focused steps to help restore smooth scanning.

Why You’re Seeing “Scanner Is Already in Use”

This message usually means:

  • A previous scan job didn’t close properly
  • Another app (like HP App or a background service) is still accessing the scanner
  • The printer software didn’t initialize correctly after the ink program update

Steps to Fix the Scanner Error

1. Restart Everything

  • Turn off your printer and unplug it for 60 seconds
  • Restart your computer
  • Reconnect the printer and turn it back on
  • Try scanning again using the HP App

Download or reinstall if needed: HP App for Windows

2. Close Conflicting Apps

  • Make sure apps like HP App, Windows Fax and Scan, or third-party scan tools are not running in the background
  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
  • End any tasks related to scanning or HP services
  • Reopen the HP App and try scanning again

3. Reinstall the Full Software Package

  • Visit the HP Software & Driver Downloads
  • Enter your printer model and download the Full Software Solution
  • Uninstall the current printer software from Control Panel > Programs
  • Restart your computer and install the new package

4. Use HP Support Assistant for Troubleshooting

  • Open HP Support Assistant from your Start menu
  • Go to Device > Troubleshooting and Fixes > Scan Check
  • Follow the guided steps to resolve scanner access issues

Download if needed: HP Support Assistant

Let me know your printer model if you’d like help locating the exact driver or scan utility. Once these steps are complete, your scanner should respond smoothly and let you get back to work.
