Can't send fax on OfficeJet 3830; get error code 388

When I send a fax on my Officejet 3830 the printer dials, connects, but then I get error code 388. Research says error is due to bad line but don't have error with phone dial to same number.

I'd like to help!

Error 388 indicates too much noise on the telephone line is preventing a valid connection between the fax machines. Retry the fax when line conditions improve

Meanwhile, print a fax test report and share the results 

On the Fax screen, touch Setup , touch Tools , touch Test Fax , and then follow the on-screen instructions. The printer displays the status of the test on the display and prints a report.
