HP 8710
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Good day,

I'm in a small office where we all have complete access to each other's computers and all folders on our Google Drive.

We have a folder on the G Drive for scanning documents to that we all can see.  Until recently, that was working just fine, but someone deleted that folder.  Not a big deal, because it's just a temporary folder for scanning to, and depending on the document, it's gets moved elswhere.

However, when I try to map the printer to that folder, HP Smart insists on me entering a Windows username and password before allowing this action.

We don't have a Windows username and password, becuase we don't need one.

Can someone, anyone help with this?  So far, HP has been useless with suggestions.  I'm about to throw this printer in the garbage and go to a different brand.

Welcome to the HP Support Community

Give permissions to the scan folder.

Press Windows key + R and type Spool hit enter.

Right-click on the printer folder select property.

Open the printer folder and delete all the folders go back

Right-click on the printer folder select properties

select security TAB

Under security Tab

Click on edit and give permission to all the folder and username.

Similar go to device and printer

Right-click on the printer

Select printer properties

Select Security Tab

Click on edit and give full permission to all the folder and username.

Then, share a folder and give full permission

  1. use an administrator account to log on to your Windows.
  2. Locate and right-click the folder that you want to share.
  3. From the context menu, click Properties.

  1. From the folder’s properties box that opens up, go to the Sharing tab.
  2. From the displayed options, click Share.

Image02

  1. On the File Sharing box, in the available field, type the name of the user or group with whom you want to share the folder.

Image03

Note: The user or group with whom you want to share the folder must exist in your computer. If it doesn’t, Windows 10 displays a message indicating that since there is no user or group by the typed name, you cannot share the folder with them.

  1. Click Add.
  2. Once added to the list, you can click the down arrow for the user or group under the Permission Level column.
  3. Choose the permission level that you want to set for the user/group on the shared folder. (Default is Read.)

Image04

  1. Click Done to share the folder.
  2. On the next box, note the share path for the folder from under its name displayed in the Individual Items list.

Note: This path must be used by the remote users to locate and access the shared folder over the network.

  1. Click Done.

Another, more advanced way of sharing a folder in Windows 10 is by adding the users or groups and setting the permissions more granularly. You can do so by following the steps given below:

  1. Follow the above instructions from steps 1 to 5.
  2. From the displayed options in the Sharing tab of the folder’s properties box, click the Advanced Sharing button from under the Advanced Sharing section.

Image06

  1. On the Advanced Sharing box, check the Share this folder checkbox.
  2. Once done, click the Permissions button.

Image07

  1. On the next box that opens up, click to select the user or group from the Group or user names list.

Note: You can also add a different user or group to the list by clicking the Add button.

  1. From the permissions list in the lower section, check or uncheck the checkboxes to set the desired permission level for the selected user or group.

Image08

  1. Click OK when done and close all the opened boxes and windows.

Setup the scan to network feature from the printer assistant.

Restart the computer and try to scan.

Keep me posted, how it goes!
