HP Smart scan suddenly stopped working with HP OfficeJet Pro 8710. Error message says "HP Smart cannot scan from this printer. Either no scanner was detected or HP Smart is not compatible with the scanner in this printer." I see multiple postings referencing a recent "update" to HP Smart as the issue, and multiple posts referencing different printers with the same issue. I have updated the printer and reinstalled HP Smart with no luck. Installing additional HP software as a "workaround" is not a resolution (although HP support has marked other posts as "solved" based on this workaround). When with the problem with HP Smart be addressed?

The latest version as of Jun, 2024 is 154.1.1072.0 (USA english). If you do not have this version then go to the Microsoft store, find HP Smart, and click "update". If update is missing then you need to run "wsreset" from the Windows search bar.
If you do not have the may 2022 full feature driver then click here: May 2022
After installing the full feature driver package, click the windows key and select all apps and find HP.
Look for HP Scan.

If HP scan is not present then use HP Smart.

I have the latest version of HP Smart as I just reinstalled yesterday (plus I verified the version). I'm a little unclear on the proposed solution... it seems this is yet another workaround, installing yet more HP software, but if it doesn't work, use HP Smart (which doesn't work). Is HP Smart never going to work again? Thanks.

HP Smart communicates with the scanner thorough the drivers. The scanner drivers and the printer drivers are in the full feature package of HP software. Microsoft, when they do have drivers, only supply printer drivers. You need the full feature drivers to be able to scan. In addition, HP smart my be limited in what it can do. i not have your 8710 printer so I do not know what it is capable of. My full feature software is on the left and the latest HP Smart on the right. HP Smart only does 100-300 dpi and only photo and pdf. The full feature software can access the full range of my printer using "HP Scan"

hmmm... that doesn't seem like a very good plan between HP & Microsoft! I've had the 8710 printer for 7 years and it has worked fine until recently, so I guess the update to HP Smart broke the connection. 😞 Thank you for the info... I will try that and see if it works. It may not be today, but I will reply back once I install the full feature drivers and let you know if that worked.

OK this is crazy. I have an older laptop that still had the HP Smart app and a connection to the 8710 printer. Out of curiosity I checked to see if scanning worked on that laptop, and it did. Same version of HP Smart connecting to the same 8710 printer. So what was different? The only obvious difference was that the old laptop connected to the printer only via the network, whereas my current computer connected to the printer via both the network and via USB cable (and always did have both connections). Long story short... disconnected the USB connection and restarted printer. Restarted PC. HP Smart app wouldn't start up. Uninstalled and reinstalled HP Smart, restarted PC and printer, and now scanning works again.
