My HP OfficeJet 3830 All-in-One Printer will not scan using the document feeder. When the first page starts feeding it suddenly stops and will not continue. An error message appears in HP Smart: "Scanner cover open". However the cover appears to be closed tight. Scanning works normally using the scanner glass. Diagnostic troubleshooting tools find no problems. Driver is up to date. My email address is: [edited ]Thank you .

Hi @okeydokey23,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
I understand your HP OfficeJet 3830 is not scanning using the document feeder — the first page starts feeding but then stops, and you get a “Scanner cover open” error even though the cover is properly closed. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.
Power Cycle the Printer
Leave the printer turned on and disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
Unplug it from the wall outlet as well.
Wait for 60 seconds, then plug it back in directly to a wall outlet (not a surge protector) and turn the printer back on.
Check the Document Feeder Cover & Latch
Open the document feeder cover and then firmly close it again to ensure it’s seated properly.
Check for any broken or loose latch mechanisms that might prevent the cover sensor from engaging.
Inspect for Debris or Paper Fragments
Lift the feeder cover and check the paper path for any small bits of paper, dust, or foreign objects.
Even tiny debris can interfere with the cover sensor or rollers.
Clean the area gently with a lint-free cloth.
Examine the Cover Sensor
Look for a small plastic tab or lever near the cover hinge, this usually triggers the “cover closed” sensor.
Make sure it isn’t stuck, bent, or obstructed.
Check Paper Type and Size
Ensure the pages you’re loading are flat, not wrinkled or torn, and meet the feeder’s size and weight specifications.
Load only a few sheets at a time to test the feeder.
Reset the Scanner Mechanism
After checking for debris and ensuring the cover is properly closed, power the printer off again.
Disconnect the power cord for 30 seconds, reconnect it, and test the feeder once more.
I hope this helps.
