HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello,

I have an HP OfficeJet Pro 8762 (8720 series) All In One printer.  My printer sees my desktop computer so that is not the issue.  The issue is I need to change the default locations that the scans get sent to on the computer.  I have checked the HP software that I have installed and I have two different software from HP for the printer that is installed.  One is simply named HP Smart and the other is named HP OfficeJet Pro 8720.  I am a corp IT professional with 25 years of experience and I must admit defeat on locating the settings that allow me to change the default scan location through the software.  I am wondering if the location is actually supposed to be changed from on the printer's settings/control panel itself instead of through the software installed on the computer?

Please advise.  Currently it is set to C:\Users\USER NAME\Documents

Thank you.

Scan to Network Folder is / can be set up as explained in the User Guide.

Each Profile can include a different destination.

EWS > HP Document / How-to (InkJet Printers – Original Format)

 Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)

NOTE:  Find printer IP address

Section Open the EWS over a local network orientation

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Scan > Scan to Network Folder > Network Folder Setup

Example - Standard EWS - Scan to Network - Profile setup

Sample includes a Windows Shared folder.

Side Bar:  I recently answered a question on this subject - the printer was about the same age so the SMB settings were correct as were the settings in Windows.  The NAS destination folder Profile did not work - It turned out (that) the customer's NAS, having only been used with an older version of Windows, was limping along with SMB1.  Worth a check if your Destination is an old NAS or a NSA with settings that have not been checked recently.

==========================================

Scanning to Computer from the Printer control panel stores the scanned content to the Documents folder.

==========================================

HP Smart - Windows application - can be made to save to a selected Destination folder using Shortcuts and a supported Cloud storage account.  It's nice but is limited to Cloud storage and what's set in the particular Shortcut.

Outside of Shortcuts, HP Smart does not understand the concept of "Default" destination folder.

Example - HP Smart - (Windows sample) - Save - PDF - Cloud - OneDrive

==========================================

HP Scan - part of the Full Feature Software - can set the Destination to either a local folder or a mapped / network folder.

Example - HP Scan - Save as PDF - Main Menu - More > Destination > Send to

9025_HP_Scan_Menu_PDF_More_Destination_99025_HP_Scan_Menu_PDF_More_Destination_9

==========================================

Standard EWS

Webscan / Web Scan – located in the Embedded Web Server (EWS) – No additional software

This option requires a network connection and EWS

EWS > HP Document / How-to

Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)

NOTE:  Find printer IP address

Section How do I manually assign an IP address to my printer?  Items 1-2

NOTE: Webscan / Web Scan is not available on Laser printers

If the printer is on the network,

If the EWS feature is available on your printer,

First Time Use Only - Standard EWS - Enable Webscan

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Settings > Security > Administrator Settings > Enable >> Check box next to Webscan

Click Apply to save any changes

Use Webscan

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Scan > Webscan

Set up Webscan the way you want it - for example, set the Source to ADF

Click Start Scan to scan your document / image using Webscan

After the scan is complete, Save the scan to your computer.

So it sounds like you might be saying that there is no way for a user to designate a folder on a given specific computer as a default folder that scans will be saved to when using the controls on the printer's display; is that correct?

It also sounds like you are saying that the substitution solution to use in place of the scan to computer would be the "scan to network folder" and then enter the path to that folder and it would accomplish the same functionality.  If that is correct it sounds like it is the same thing, it is just that HP calls it "scan to network folder" instead of "scan to computer".

Are all of my understandings correct?

Well, I didn't actually think you would like the answer.  Smiling.

Everyone wants "Scan to Computer" to include a feature to Scan from the printer control panel and then choose a destination default.

In so much that I'm aware, the "Scan to Computer" destination is not malleable (cannot be changed) at the printer control panel.  I may well be missing something -- if I get time, perhaps I'll take a look at whether there is a trick to it.

Scan to Network Folder Profiles can be created and edited to include a Destination folder -- in fact, the destination is a necessary part of the setup of each Profile.

I'd like to say that things are better if you would invest in new hardware.

In my opinion, things are somewhat better in some areas.

I have a "new-ish" OfficeJet Pro 9135e - nice printer.

Different EWS format that includes extra security and a few new features.

Scan to Computer is still the same old plodding work horse.

I can definitely live with the answer.  It just sounds like HP could have tied the software and the printer's communication to it together better.  The network folder customization works just as I would have wanted the "scan to computer" on the printer itself to work.  I do just have a question though.

I have 3 computers in my apt on my SOHO network plus I have a NAS drive set up. I know that my printer is pretty old (but still works well), does the software or the printer itself have the ability to set up multiple network scan to locations? If yes, how would that be done?

Thanks......

@Wonder-Woman

You are welcome.

Scan to Network Folder supports multiple Profiles on the same network.

Each Profile can be created for a different (shared) Destination (folder) on the same subnet and select Cloud storage accounts signed in and accessible from your computer (example, OneDrive).

It's been a number of years since I had my 8740.

Printers support different options -

For example, the OfficeJet Pro 9135e supports Quick Sets (Profiles) for

Copy

Email

Network Folder

USB Drive

SharePoint
