Ok so no follow up reply from HP support (cool) but here's how I figured it out in case anyone else has the same problem.  There's a setting called eSCL (AirPrint-Scan) that needs to be turned off.  You can still print from your phone/tablet etc...  If you need to scan from there, turn it back on I guess.  Here are the steps:

1) Find your printer's IP address.  I did this by clicking on the Wi-Fi button on the printer, then selecting "Network Wi-Fi."  The IP address is listed.

2) Type the printer's IP address that you just found into your web browser and hit enter.

3) Click on the tab along the top of the screen that says "Networking", then on the sidebar that opens on the left side of the screen, select "Advanced."

4) Under the list of options titled "Enabled Features" uncheck the box for eSCL (AirPrint-Scan).

5) Hit the apply button in the bottom right corner and enjoy the sound of your scanner not randomly going off constantly.

Hi @SDCKO79,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

Try these steps:

1. Disable “Scan to Computer” Feature

  • Open HP Easy Scan or HP Smart on your Mac.
  • Go to SettingsScan SettingsManage Scan to Computer.
  • Turn off “Scan to Computer” and restart the printer.

2. Check for Stuck Scan Jobs

  • Open System PreferencesPrinters & Scanners.
  • Select your printer, then Open Print Queue.
  • Delete any stuck or pending scan jobs.

3. Reset the Printer

  • On the printer touchscreen, go to SetupServiceRestore Defaults.
  • Restart the printer and check if the issue persists.

4. Disconnect Unwanted Scan Shortcuts

  • On your printer’s control panel, check if a scan shortcut (like auto-scan to a folder or email) is configured.
  • Disable any unwanted scan profiles in HP Embedded Web Server:
    1. Find the printer’s IP address (from Settings → Network).
    2. Enter the IP address in a browser.
    3. Look for Scan Settings and remove any auto-scan setups.

5. Update or Reinstall HP Software

  • Uninstall HP Smart or HP Easy Scan from your Mac.
  • Download the latest version from HP’s website and reinstall.

6. Check Physical Scanner Button

  • If the scanner button is stuck, it might trigger scans automatically.
  • Try pressing the Scan button firmly a few times to release it.

Let me know if the issue continues! 😊
