Colored vertical lines appearing on scan

Hi all, thanks in advance for any replies.

I was cruising along just fine scanning a number or receipts, took a break, and then my next document scan these vertical lines appeared and I can't get rid of them.  I searched forums and some recommended cleaning all the lenses, which I've done.  I've unplugged the scanner and reset the computer as well.  No luck.  I've attached a screen grab of a PDF that I scanned.  It's a blank sheet of paper and you can see the vertical lines appearing on the left side.  Any suggestions?

Thanks Barachiel - the phone support turned out to be a waste of time.  This was a hardware issue on a machine that is less than 2 years old.  The solution was for them to sell me an "upgraded" 8740 for a "discounted" price that was easily  available on the web.
