Hi @TeriWells,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're encountering an internal communication error in the scanner subsystem of your HP MFP M428fdw printer, here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue.

Restart the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for a minute, then plug the printer back in and turn it on.
  • Check if the error persists.

Check Connections:

  • Ensure that all cables, including the USB or network cables, are securely connected.
  • If using a network connection, make sure the printer is properly connected to the network.

Update Firmware:

  • Visit the HP Support website and check if there is a firmware update available for your printer model.
  • If an update is available, follow the instructions provided by HP to update the firmware.

Reset Network Settings:

  • If the printer is connected to a network, try resetting the network settings.
  • Go to the printer's control panel, navigate to Network or Setup, and look for an option to reset network settings.

Check for Paper Jams:

  • Make sure there are no paper jams in the scanner or any other part of the printer.

Reinstall Scanner Drivers:

  • Uninstall the scanner drivers from your computer.
  • Download the latest scanner drivers from the HP website and reinstall them.

Remember that you can still print and receive faxes, so the issue seems to be specific to the scanner subsystem.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
