macOS 11.0 Big Sur

Trying to copy to email address and it shows me the error "The server's security certificate cannot be verified". Where does a Mac OS user download the appropriate apps to configure email with a local client?

@MRaco, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're trying to configure your HP printer to send scanned documents via email using a local email client on macOS, and you're encountering the error "The server's security certificate cannot be verified," it typically indicates issues with the SMTP server settings or the printer's compatibility with your email provider's security protocols. Here’s how you can resolve this issue:

Solutions

1. Use the Correct SMTP Settings

Ensure you are using the correct SMTP settings for your email provider. Here are some common settings:

  • For Gmail:
    • SMTP Server: smtp.gmail.com
    • Port: 465 (SSL) or 587 (TLS)
    • Authentication: Yes (Use your full email address and password or an App Password)
    • Encryption: SSL/TLS
  • For Outlook:
    • SMTP Server: smtp.office365.com
    • Port: 587
    • Encryption: STARTTLS
  • For Yahoo, iCloud, or other providers, check their official SMTP settings to ensure accuracy.

2. Use an App Password (for Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo)

If you have two-step verification (2FA) enabled, your regular password may not work. You will need to generate an App Password from your email provider:

3. Check the Certificate Issue

Since you're receiving an SSL certificate error, consider the following:

  • Try switching TLS/SSL settings (e.g., from SSL to STARTTLS).
  • If using a company email server, consult your IT team for the correct certificate.
  • Test the email configuration with another device (like your Mac’s Mail app) to confirm the certificate is valid.

4. Update Printer Firmware

Outdated firmware can lead to issues with modern encryption standards. To update:

  • Visit the HP Support website and download the latest firmware for your printer model.
  • Install it using HP Easy Start or HP Firmware Updater.

5. Download Email Clients on macOS

If you need to set up a local email client, you can download them from:

By following these steps, you should be able to resolve the certificate error and successfully configure your HP printer to send scanned documents via email.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
