I recently adjusted the copy settings to resize a photograph to a smaller size. Ever since then, any time I copy with the copier, the images print our extremely slow and the ink quality is more gray than a sharp black. I have reset the resizing to normal; i have reset the printer to factory settings several times; i have unplugged the unit from power. I have run print reports and done scan doctor; reports print out quickly and sharp, black ink. Every other option on the unit works fine - it scans, prints, receives faxes - all at normal speed and image quality. It is only when copying that the printer then goes super slow and the images don't come out sharp and black.

Welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.
Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out.
I understand that you are facing copy quality issues with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 All-in-One Printer.
Don't worry as I have a few steps that should help fix this issue.
And here's the step by step guide for you in the link: Fixing Copy Quality Issues
If the issue persists then, you may update the firmware from the link: Firmware Update
Let me know how that works.
I hope you have a good day ahead.

Thank you for the recommendations. After completing all of the suggestions, including installing the updated firmware, the copier continues to perform the same - when I place a document to be copied, the copy comes out very slow, like each line is being printed individually versus the whole document coming out quickly in one action, and the ink quality is slightly more grey. The status report after the firmware update came out quickly and had vibrant black text.
Any further suggestions?
Thank you.
